You’ve heard of the golden rule, haven’t you? “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” So often we are ready and willing to do that first part – “love your neighbor” – that we forget about the second bit – love yourself. After all, in order to love your neighbor, you must first learn to love yourself. With Valentine’s Day literally around the corner, maybe it’s time to give a little TLC to the person who is with you every moment of the day, who – for better or worse – has never left your side, and who quite literally makes you so indomitably you. After all, you wouldn’t be where you are today if it wasn’t for her.
This week, for a special edition of The Weekend Guide, here are our top picks for self-care to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. Boys are nice, and gals are the best, but perhaps just this once, be your own Valentine.
Embrace Self-Care Saturday
Saturday is February 13th. How about letting Valentine’s come early just for you this year and embracing a #selfcaresaturday routine so delicious you might make it a habit? No seriously, we love it so much that it has become a weekly ritual we cannot live without. From the minute you wake up, till you lay your head on your pillow to rest, make a plan for how you are going to luxuriate in your special day. But remember: don’t rush, don’t stress, and if plans change, it’s all good. There are no rules except one: do what makes you feel good.
Take Yourself on a Date
Since there are no brunches to FOMO over this weekend anyway, it’s the perfect chance for you to take yourself on a date and treat that girl who has never given up on you. Take yourself to dinner, bring a blanket to the beach and just listen to the waves, journal, paint your own picture, watch a girly movie or three, drive out to Hatta for a hike in the hills, or see an art exhibit… the world is literally your oyster. Do whatever makes you happy and enjoy how much you enjoy it. Plan it like you would for the most important person in your life. Because we’re telling you, she literally is.
Make it All About Your Skin
The largest organ in our body, our skin, takes a serious beating just from being the outer layer holding us all together. From wind, to sand, to sun, to sea, we don’t always have the time or the know-how to treat our epidermis the way it deserves. Well, we’ve taken all the guesswork out. Here is a step-by-step guide from our very own Fashion and Beauty Director, Grace Gordon, on how to draw the perfect bath and perfect a routine that will literally age you in reverse. Go ahead. Do it twice. You deserve it.
Is it Time for a Digital Decluttering?
“Like our homes, our virtual living spaces – which are likely to impact our mental wellbeing and productivity – need to be tidied up from time to time.” Digital decluttering is increasingly important in a never-ending digital world. Just as we take time to clean out our closets or do some spring cleaning, sometimes we just need to bite the bullet and set aside time to clean up our digital world. Think of it like a virtual workout. Yes, it takes time and it can be tedious, but once you’ve finished, your sense of accomplishment and that feeling of freedom from all the junk will feel so totally worth it.
If you have not tried meditation yet, you are missing out. We know it can feel all woo-woo and fru-fru, but hey, it’s the weekend, and it’s just you. No one is here to judge you for trying something new. What’s the worst that could happen? You realize it’s not for you and eat some ice cream. Literally. If you’re new, try giving this new Netflix series on meditation a go, or just go on a meditation walk. You will be amazed at what it can do for your state of mind and body. If this isn’t your first foray into meditation, then you already know the benefits. Set aside time this weekend with zero distractions and give yourself the gift of peace.
