The world was left in a state of shock as the heartbreaking news about the massive explosion in Beirut broke out last week. Over 150 people were killed, thousands were injured as buildings collapsed, and entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble – all in a matter of seconds. The deadly explosion that sent shockwaves through the city has been recorded as the equivalent of a magnitude 3.3 earthquake by the United States Geological Survey. It is one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in human history.

The Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, took to Instagram to express his support and sincere condolences to the people of Lebanon. The Burj Khalifa lit up with the Lebanese flag on August 4 as a sign of the UAE’s solidarity with the nation and those affected by the tragic incident.

Understanding that it is paramount to stand by the grief-stricken nation of Lebanon, and provide help in every way possible, the leaders of the UAE have extended support in various ways.

Emirates Red Crescent flew 40 metric tons of critical medical and food supplies as well as nutritional supplements for children to Beirut to support the victims of the explosion. Meanwhile, 12 tons of protective equipment – enough to supply 10,000 frontline workers – was sent to Lebanon on the orders of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

Additionally, the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, dispatched 30 tons of emergency medical equipment and aid including trauma kits, surgical supplies, and personal protection equipment (PPE), provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC).

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and Honorary President of the Emirates Red Crescent, has donated AED 10 million to support Emirates Red Crescent’s relief project working towards providing urgent medical help to the people of Beirut.

Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Assistant to the Chairman of the ERC for Women’s Affairs, and Chairperson of the Higher Committee for Ataya initiative, has directed that AED 5 million from the proceeds of the 9th Edition of the Ataya charity exhibition be allocated to the treatment of injured children in Lebanon’s explosion.

The horrific blast will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the mental health of everyone affected directly or indirectly. As an act of support, Dubai welcomed passengers arriving from Beirut in a special way. Not only were they fast-tracked through security, but every passenger was welcomed with a white rose by the Dubai Airport staff.

As a part of the ‘Together for Beirut’ initiative by the Lebanese Council in UAE 1000 window panes have been sent to Lebanon to help repair homes and shops destroyed by the blast. 138 tons of glass was loaded onto six shipment containers that will sail from Dubai to Tripoli on Wednesday, August 13.

“When we heard the news of the explosion we came together to see what the immediate need was for those affected in the surrounding areas,” said Sufyan Saleh, president of the council.“We are solely focused on underprivileged families and people with small businesses,” he added.
