Protests Sweep the Globe
From Australia and Syria to Paris and Brazil, protests have broken out across the world in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. The murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police was the match that lit the flame, but racial tensions had been simmering in America – and the world at large – for centuries. Even in the face of retaliation by police forces, the protests have continued unabated. We can’t help but feel that this is the beginning of a long overdue revolution.
Meghan Markle Has a Message for the Graduating Class of 2020
In an address to the students of Immaculate High School in Los Angeles, which she once attended, Meghan Markle spoke out about the Black Lives Matter protests and police brutality. “What we have seen in our country, our state, and in our hometown of LA has been absolutely devastating,” she stated. “I wasn’t sure what I could say to you. I wanted to say the right thing and I was really nervous that I wouldn’t or it would get picked apart. And I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing — because George Floyd’s life mattered.”
She concluded, “Now you get to be part of rebuilding… because when the foundation is broken, so are we. You are going to leave with love and compassion and use your voice in a stronger way than you have ever been able to… you are going to vote… I know you know that Black lives matter and I am already excited for what you are going to do with the world.”
Brands Give Back
While the world responded to the protests, social media was ignited. United by a common cause, users took to the comment sections of brands both large and small, demanding accountability. To their credit, many brands responded with promises to do better, as well as donations to help support the black community.
Luxury brands were shockingly slow to respond. However, some, like Balenciaga, rectified their lassitude by coming through with an annual fund in support of the NAACP and local French nonprofits. Their parent company, Kering, who also holds brands like Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta in its portfolio, made a donation to the NAACP, and promised to “continue to develop initiatives and internal programs to foster respect, equality, and fairness.” Many beauty brands also stepped up, like Huda Beauty, which pledged $500,000 to the NAACP, while Glossier donated $500,000 to be shared among multiple organizations like The Equal Justice Initiative and We the Protesters.
