After the sh*tshow that is 2020 so far, can April 1st even be considered April Fool’s Day? We think not. But unlike past years that were rife with bad jokes and worse pranks, the start of this April will kickstart a NYUAD Arts Center series to look forward to: Reconnect.

First Dubai, then Sharjah, and now Abu Dhabi – one by one, the major cultural institutions of the UAE are stepping up, practicing social distancing while keeping the local arts and culture scene going. Alserkal Avenue recently launched Alserkal Online, a digital platform where audiences can explore art exhibitions (complete with 360° views) and meet the artists, minds, and makers of the community. Sharjah Art Foundation, meanwhile, has taken the scheduled screenings of its SAF Film Programme online. But back to Reconnect.

Every Wednesday throughout April, this new online series will showcase several of the incredible performances that have taken place at the Arts Center over the last five years via its Facebook page. On the roster? Arab-American comedian Maysoon Zayid, who is beloved worldwide for her unique and hilarious takes on family, terrorism, and living with cerebral palsy. Her sold-out show from 2017 will stream on April 1, followed by Jordanian-Palestinian band 47Soul – known for leading the Shamstep electronic dance music movement – in concert on April 8. The Cuban-Khaleeji Project, which brought the music of Spain, Cuba, Morocco, and the Middle East together on one stage, will be revisited next on April 15. As for the remaining Wednesdays of April?
