We get it. We can barely keep up with the onslaught of information ourselves. That being said, it’s our mission to keep readers in the know, which is why we’ve combed through it all, distilled it to its essence, and dispensed it into easily digestible tidbits. Want to be the most knowledgeable culture savant in your group of friends? Then check back every Sunday for what you’ve missed in the world of culture, celebrities, and fashion.

Rihanna Opens Fenty Beauty's First TikTok House

Rihanna has extended her entrepreneurial reach to include landlording. Having recently founded a Fenty Beauty TikTok house, where five very lucky TikTok users get to live and create content for her brand, the popstar has cleverly engineered a new way to expand her beauty brand’s commercial presence. “We are standing in the official first Fenty Beauty TikTok home. I just wanted to create a platform for the next wave of content creators. I think our generation is the sickest, the illest, the most creative,” she shared.

Inside, the Fenty Beauty haven boasts beauty stations, a stocked makeup pantry, excellent lighting, and the current presence of TikTok tenants Savannah Palacio (@savpalacio), Makayla (@makayladid), Challan Trishann (@challxn), Dawn Morante (@thedawndishsoap), and Emmy Combs (@emmycombss).

Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison

Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein received his sentence last week. At 67 years old, he was charged with serving 23 years, which may mean he will live out his final years in prison. Immediately following the sentence, he was remanded into custody without bail, but made a detour at Bellevue Hospital after complaining of chest pains. He is now in the infirmary unit of Rikers Island, New York City’s main jail complex. Weinstein plans to appeal his conviction, but since the initial trial, 16 more women have come forward with accusations of alleged assault.

Coronavirus Reaches Celebrity Sector

Coronavirus became “real” for many the moment it affected one of the world’s most beloved celebrities. Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for COVID-19 while shooting on location in Australia. Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has also been diagnosed, along with NBA player Rudy Gobert and Chelsea FC player Callum Hudson-Odoi. Others, like supermodel Heidi Klum, who are experiencing symptoms but don’t have an official diagnosis have also been placed in quarantine. Despite Donald Trump’s declaration that this is a “foreign virus”, COVID-19 is clearly a great equalizer.

Even More Events Are Cancelled

One of the most effective ways to slow the spread of COVID-19 is self-quarantine, otherwise known as social distancing. In order to safeguard citizens, many high-profile events have been either cancelled or postponed, most notably Coachella, SXSW, all Broadway shows, and Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival.

However, the biggest fashion event of the year is still proceeding. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has confirmed that it has no plans to cancel the annual Met Gala. “We are proceeding as planned and look forward to a wonderful evening,” said Nancy Chilton, the Chief External Relations Officer of The Costume Institute. “We will of course continue to keep a close eye on the situation.” The Met Gala will take place on May 4, 2020.

FTC Cracks Down on SponCon

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission filed an official complaint against Teami, the company behind all of those celebrity detox-tea posts. The complaint alleges that “Teami, LLC, and its owners, Adi Halevy and Yogev Malul, claimed without reliable scientific evidence that their Teami ’30 Day Detox Pack’ would help consumers lose weight, and that its other teas fight cancer, clear clogged arteries, decrease migraines, treat and prevent flus, and treat colds”. Not only are we happy to see shady #sponcon posts being targeted, but we’d also like to point out that tea detoxes don’t actually work.
