Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Step Down as Senior Royals

It’s been a whirlwind week for the British monarchy. In what has been dubbed as “Megxit”, the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have renounced their roles as senior royals and chosen to move to North America in an effort to become financially independent. The news came as a shock, as reports flooded the media that the Royal Family had been caught off guard by the announcement. Given rising tensions within the family and the aggressive media coverage of the young couple in the UK, there are plenty of reasons why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would want to take a step back from their royal duties. Reactions, however, have been mixed.

In the US, social media erupted with glee, comparing their decision to an anti-establishment grand escape, while the decision has widely been met with mockery and derision in the UK. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace had only this to say: “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.” You could cut the tension with a knife.
