June 5: Do Your Part
World Environment Day takes place on June 5, and Costa Coffee is encouraging us all to do our part. Following the introduction of reusable cups to stores earlier this year, the coffeehouse is now turning its attention to its straws, replacing all plastic straws with a more environmentally friendly option. To celebrate, it has commissioned artist Mariska Nell to create an upcycled straw globe installation entitled Last Straw, which is currently on display at Terminal 3 in Dubai International. Oh, and every customer with a reusable cup on this day will get a free coffee!
June 6: Laugh Aloud
The name Russell Peters needs no introduction and, to the delight of Dubai residents, he is returning to the city as part of his latest world tour, Deported. Performing at the brand new Coca-Cola Arena in Jumeirah, the award-winning actor and comedian is expected to serve audiences his signature brand of observational humor. Buy your tickets here.
June 7: Test Your Limits
This one’s for you runners out there: the Dubai Desert Road Run returns to The Sevens Stadium, kicking off at 6 a.m. This community event will welcome everyone from first-time social runners to the country’s finest athletes. There will be three distances – 3km, 5km, and 10km – to choose from, and you’ll be rewarded a bespoke event medal at the finish line, regardless of which you pick. You can register for the race here.
In celebration of Global Wellness Day, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai will host an entirely not-for profit day that aims to help people kickstart their path to a healthier, more fulfilling life. The first ever film premiere arrives at Dubai Opera as Rocketman will screen for an exclusive event before it hits cinemas. The biopic reveals the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years, following the fantastical journey of his transformation from a shy piano prodigy into an international superstar and style icon. Following its critically acclaimed sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, And This Is My Friend Mr Laurel is heading to Dubai. With temperatures soaring, fitness freaks are headed inside – Dubai Sports World, to be exact. The city’s largest indoor sports venue spans over 25,000 square meters of air conditioned space at Dubai World Trade Centre, hosting everything from basketball and badminton to cricket, parkour, and a 14-element obstacle course. June 20 to 27: Find Your Faith
Dubai Drama Group returns to Courtyard Playhouse to present Irish dramatist Brian Friel’s haunting and critically acclaimed work, Faith Healer. First produced in 1979, the play tells the story of itinerant faith healer Francis Hardy as well as his wife Grace and long-serving manager Teddy. Through a series of monologues, the conflicting memories and shifting realities reveal how their lives were entwined. RSVP here.
June 21 to August 3: Ready, Set, Shop
Six weeks of sales – need we say more? The annual Dubai Summer Surprises shopping festival returns on June 21, featuring discounts and promotions by malls, entertainment venues, theme parks, and even hotels across town. Expect these to be accompanied by stage shows, interactive workshops, and giveaways, making the scorching temperatures that much more bearable.
June 21 to 29: Picture This
Calling all foodies. And all photographers. Gulf Photo Plus is taking two weekends in a row to delve into all things food photography, starting with Introduction to Food Photography – a workshop centered on how to shoot, style, and edit images of food – on June 21. The following weekend, Introduction to Food Styling for Photographers will introduce participants to the basics of food styling for photography, with tips and tricks on how to prop, prep, style, and conceptualize the visuals on June 29.
