Idris Elba wedding

We get it. We can barely keep up with the onslaught of information ourselves. That being said, it’s our mission to keep readers in the know, which is why we’ve combed through it all, distilled it to its essence, and dispensed it into easily digestible tidbits. Want to be the most knowledgeable culture savant in your group of friends? Then check back every Sunday for what you’ve missed in the world of celebrities and fashion.

1

Idris Elba Ties the Knot

Sorry, ladies. He’s taken. Idris Elba, the dashing actor known for his roles in Pacific Rim and Luther, is officially off the market. Following in the footsteps of celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Elba and his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre got married in a secret ceremony over the weekend. They chose Marrakesh, Morocco as the setting of their perfect day and, while the ceremony was secret, it was by no means understated.

Friends and family traveled from all over the world to enjoy a celebration that included fire dancers, camels, and more. The couple first met in 2017, and Elba proposed a year later in February 2018. For the ceremony, Dhowre selected a beautiful gown by Vera Wang, while Elba wore a custom suit by Ozwald Boateng. Meanwhile, the couple used the hashtag #Idrina for social media posts related to the wedding, and we have to admit it has a nice ring to it.

Olivia Munn Critiques the Critics

Olivia Munn took to Twitter and Instagram to air her grievances against Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself, a popular website that critiques celebrity outfits. The actress penned a lengthy essay about the pains of being fashion-policed after a Go Fug Yourself post took a dig at her striped Peter Pilotto suit by saying, “This is just kinda like she got roped into making a sequel to American Hustle that ended up going straight to on-demand. Things could be worse.” Munn accused Cocks and Morgan of “spewing vitriol” for criticizing her outfit, but also conflated that same critique with issues of body-shaming and contributing to the objectification of women.

Social media users went in on Munn for her critique of the critics, pointing out that she was acting in bad faith by accusing them of body-shaming her when Cocks and Morgan are both renowned for never commenting on a celebrity’s figure. In a statement to the press, they responded, “[we] absolutely respect Olivia Munn’s right to her opinion – even if we disagree, as we do here. Red carpet fashion is a big business and an art form like any other, and as such, there is room to critique it. Having said that, we wish her nothing but the best and look forward to her next project.” Did they go too far? You be judge.

Matthew Knowles Unveils Plans for Destiny’s Child Musical

Before you get too excited about the prospect of a show chronicling the rise of the legendary music and the formidable talents of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams (or previous members LaTavia Roberson, LeToya Luckett, and Farrah Franklin), we have to stop you. We, too, were instantly thrilled at the news that Beyoncé’s father, Matthew Knowles, was planning on creating a Destiny’s Child musical, only to read further into it and discover that it is really about his journey as the ostensible manager of the group.

On his website, he shared, “I want to pull back the curtain. I feel it’s time to give the world an opportunity to hear, see, and feel the victories and failures that I’ve had as a husband, father and manager who risked everything in pursuit of fulfilling dreams – those of mine and others.’” However, Knowles is still estranged from his daughter, and there is no sign that any of the other members of Destiny’s Child have any involvement in the musical. This could get pretty awkward.

R. Kelly Loses Lawsuit

There are now multiple lawsuits alleging misconduct, assault, and abuse at the hands of R&B singer R. Kelly in the wake of the damning documentary series, Surviving R. Kelly. Last week, Kelly failed to show up to court in Cook County, Chicago, where he was facing criminal charges concerning the abuse of an underage girl in the late 90s. As a result of his failure to appear, Kelly will likely be ordered to pay damages to the accuser.

Details of the case emerged from the Chicago Tribune, stating, “Cook County prosecutors have alleged that Kelly’s manager approached the girl as she celebrated her 16th birthday at a restaurant, gave her Kelly’s card, and told her to contact him. Her mother intercepted the card, but H.W. later found it in the mom’s purse and began to have sexual encounters with the singer about once a month, prosecutors said.” He was 36 at the time of the alleged encounters.

Instagram Experiments with New Features

“I personally want to participate in social media with the option of not having to show my followers or likes,” Kanye West tweeted last year. We’re not saying this is because of him, but we’re not saying it’s not. Instagram recently announced that it is considering the possibility of hiding the like count on photos. While the social media platform has not yet started testing the feature, a leaked design prototype suggests that the experiment is in the works.

Prada Debuts First Fine Jewelry Collection

For the first time ever, you’ll be able to purchase fine jewelry from Prada. In the luxury Italian’s brand’s classic tradition of turning the mundane into the avant-garde, Prada’s first fine jewelry collection features a series of 18-ct gold earrings, bracelets, pendants, and necklaces featuring everything from bananas and robots to bunny rabbits.

In debuting its first fine jewelry collection, Prada also committed to only using supplies who have Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC) certification. Although the pieces look simple, they achieve fine jewelry standards by careful techniques like precision casting of the gold, CNC machining and wire drawing to cut the diamonds, and more. If you’re on the hunt for even more ways to add Prada to your wardrobe, here’s your chance.
