Influential Filmmaker Agnès Varda Passes Away
Agnès Varda was regarded as the “grandmother of new wave cinema” and considered one of the foremost female filmmakers of our time. She passed away last week at the age of 90, and is survived by her children, Rosalie Varda and Mathieu Demy. Not only did she forge a feminist path in filmmaking – like 2017’s Faces Places – but she is also credited with discovering a young Harrison Ford.
Varda also directed one of the best documentaries in existence, The Gleaners and I, which she shot with a handheld camera. An outpouring of love and remembrance from all sectors of the film world flooded in after news of her death, including memorial posts by celebrities like Lena Dunham, Madonna, and many others.

On this day in 2013, Agnes Varda told me she just couldn’t stop making things, that she wrote every morning starting at 4am. She showed me a notebook full of drawings of possible props and then she finished the leftover drinks on all the tables around us. It was her idea to pound it out. Rest in power to the best ever to do it.
