There was a shock victory in the best picture category, two black women made history with their wins, and a leading actress was snubbed for the seventh time in a row at the 91st Academy Awards – but did anyone even notice?
They were too busy discussing, dissecting, and gawking over that rendition of “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. It all started innocently enough. The curtains went up, out came a piano, and Cooper took Gaga’s hand to escort her to the stage. What followed was the most heartfelt, emotional, and – dare we say it – passionate performance we have ever seen. Between them gazing intensely at each other, leaning into each other, and smiling tenderly as the song drew to a close, their chemistry was palpable. And that’s an understatement.
What everyone did notice was that among audience members such as Sam Elliott, Trevor Noah, and Jennifer Lopez – all of whom commended the performance with a standing ovation – was supermodel and Cooper’s girlfriend of four years, Irina Shayk. Gaga, in contrast, is newly single, having recently broken up with fiancé Christian Carino. With many eyes on her, the model handled the evening with grace, even embracing the popstar when “Shallow” won in the Best Original Song category. Naturally, the Twittersphere had an opinion or two about it all. Here, we’re sharing our favorites.
