One thing you might not know about Savoir Flair is that one of the women on its editorial team has also been moonlighting as a professional radio DJ for the past seven years. So who better to launch our very first installment of Savoir Flair Radio than our very own resident music expert – just in time for Galentine’s Day.
For the uninitiated, Galentine’s Day started with the ambitious and hilarious Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) on Parks and Recreation, who regularly went above and beyond for her close gal pals. Every February 13th, she created an epic event called “Galentine’s Day” geared toward the appreciation of her closest friends – and the concept soon seized hold globally. In honor of the unofficial holiday that now precedes Valentine’s Day, we’re borrowing an idea from Kathleen Hanna of the iconic Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill for our ‘Girls to the Front’ playlist.
Here’s a bit of music history to flavor our playlist: Hanna completely changed the nature of live shows by demanding that all of the girls in the venue come to the front of the stage so they could safely enjoy the show under her watchful eye. For more on her incredible career, we recommend The Punk Singer, a documentary that is profound regardless of your interest in punk music – we get that it’s a pretty specific music genre, but Hanna’s story is still amazing and worth your time.
Our playlist brings girls to the front of your notice, with a playlist of all-female acts you’ve likely never heard of before. All genres are represented here – think: dance/electronica, R&B, rock, and folk. We’ve even included a track from real-life BFFs Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, who recently formed the supergroup boygenius and have already received critical praise for their debut album. This is your chance to discover incredible new songs, elevate your music credentials, and enjoy all things “gal” related on this very special holiday.
