She’s celebrating her 34th birthday today, so we’re celebrating her! Former Victoria’s Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes is known for her stunning good looks, but there’s so much more that you may not know about her. If you’ve been curious about what the Dutch model does to keep fit, how she spends her free time, and what her aspirations outside of modeling are, you’re in luck – we’re answering all those questions, and then some.
Between her love for elephants and a drive to speak out on issues close to her heart, Kroes’ beauty clearly goes beyond skin-deep. Married to a DJ and modeling around the world while bringing attention to important wildlife causes, this real-life angel seems to do it all. Learn more about the birthday girl, below.
She's got a philanthropic side.
Passionate about preserving the elephant population and ending the demand for ivory, Kroes has been vocal about the cause throughout her various collaborations. Working with Loewe and Tiffany & Co. in partnership with Knot on My Planet, the model is an active, outspoken supporter of the Elephant Crisis Fund.

The story behind our amazing collaboration! @knotonmyplanet X @loewe for the @elephantcrisisfund ♥️🐘♥️ #knotonmyplanet #LoeweKOMP #loewe Thank you to the amazing women of the @samburutrust for the beed work on the bag! I’m beyond proud and grateful for all the support and everyone who is part of this project for a cause so close to my heart!
She's real about the downsides of the modeling industry.
Kroes has, in the past, expressed that the modeling industry creates insecurities, delving into how it can affect people – even herself. Addressing this during an interview with The Telegraph, she once said, “I feel I’m such a big part of that insecurity that some girls might have because of my job, that girls think they have to be that picture. And even boys, they think that that picture exists and it’s so frustrating because I don’t look like that picture – I wake up not looking like that picture.”
She advocates a healthy lifestyle.
One would assume that to walk the Victoria’s Secret runway, an Angel’s workout plan is crazy rigorous. However, Kroes credits her fit physique to an easy-to-follow combination of weight training, ballet, boxing, and a healthy diet – no fad diets and countless hours on the treadmill for this girl!
She held her own in a box-office hit.
Consider this a case of perfect casting. Tapped to play an Amazon warrior, Kroes appeared in 2017 smash hit Wonder Woman, proving herself a great actress in addition to being a catwalk queen.
She never gave up on her childhood passion.
Kroes’ parents were champion speed skaters in the 1970s, so it’s only natural that she wanted to pursue a similar path when she was growing up. However, life had other plans and modeling came calling, but she never gave up the hobby – as evidenced below.
She's working to preserve the Frisian language.
Dutch by origin, Kroes originates from the Friesland region of the Netherlands, where the preferred language is actually Frisian. In order to help preserve the language, she’s an ambassador for the Praat mar Frysk cause. Translation? “Just speak Frisian.”
She's a mother of two.
The supermodel welcomed Phyllon Joy Gorré – her first child with her DJ husband Sunnery James – in January 2011. Three years later, her daughter Myllena Mae Gorré was born. Scouring her Instagram account, it’s clear that “mom” is perhaps her favorite title.
She has an empowering message to share.
Whether it’s about aging, modeling, or the inequalities of the world, Kroes knows the value in using her platform for good. Taking away the stigma of aging in an Instagram post, she opened up about the sense of empowerment that comes with getting older and being true to yourself.

It’s always so special to be on the iconic red carpet in Cannes for the film festival. Thank you so much @tomford for dressing me in this amazing tuxedo! It felt great to wear a suit, I would say that it felt empowering to ‘wear the pants’ and to keep it minimal yet so strong from within after having had amazing conversations with my L’oreal ambassadors about equality and what beauty really means, I feel better then ever the older I get and the more I get to know myself and learn about life while raising two kids. Aging is a beautiful thing when you own it! We are all worth it♥️ Thank you @piaget @ketevan1 @bushwickfreddy @stephanelancien @thevalgarland @tiffanyleighpatton #lorealparis #wereworthit #cannes2018
