Raise your hand if you’re not really feeling 2019 (yet) and in dire need of a remedy – we certainly are. That’s exactly why we’ve compiled a list of things that are bound to spice up the months ahead. From the return of some of our favorite binge-worthy shows – and some new ones we’re excited to stream – to the birth of the royal baby, pop culture really is the gift that keeps on giving. Here’s what to expect.
And the Award Goes To...
As it was recently announced – and after much controversy – this year’s Academy Awards will not have a host for the first time in 30 years, which makes this awards season one for the ages. Following the role of the #MeToo movement at last year’s edition, the Oscars stage will once again become a coveted spot for celebrities to make social statements. From the Grammys to the SAG Awards and the BAFTAs, we’re sure the stage and the red carpet will make for memes, powerful speeches, and unforgettable moments galore.
Take the Stage
Another moment of controversy, Maroon 5 is set to perform at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show with speculated guest Travis Scott, though it has been rumored that guest acts have been hard to pin down for NFL’s biggest event of the year. With past headliners like Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, Maroon 5 has big shoes to fill – even if many aren’t happy with their decision to perform at all. Much like the Academy Awards, we’re interested in seeing if there will be some historic social statements hitting the center stage come February 3rd.
Baby Makes Three
They wed last year, and will welcome a baby this year! When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their pregnancy in the fall of 2018, all anyone could talk about was the baby’s arrival in spring of 2019. This is the first child for both newlyweds, and it’s safe to say – if Markle’s maternity style is any indication – that we have a lot of stylish baby outings to look forward to. Here’s to royal baby fever 2019!
Spice of Life
They came back together in 2007 and 2012, but the world clearly didn’t get enough, so the Spice Girls are back again! Though Victoria Beckham (a.k.a. Posh Spice) is missing from the line-up, it’s not stopping the remaining girls from getting the band back together for a 12-day tour of the UK this summer. For a few weeks between May and June, we can party like it’s 1999 – that’s truly what we really, really, want.

Blast from the Past
Between live-action versions of both Lion King and Dumbo, we’re noticing a pattern here. Also on the agenda in 2019? The release of Toy Story 4, a new Men in Black, a Roswell reboot, and a Charlie’s Angels remake starring Kristen Stewart – the future is looking real familiar.
Get the popcorn ready because the silver screen is about to be the hottest ticket in town. Netflix hit Grace and Frankie is set to return on January 18th for its fifth season, while the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale is speculated to return in April – which is when the final season of Game of Thrones is also expected. Stranger Things, meanwhile, is coming back on July 4th, so consider your TV schedule jam-packed.
New and Novel
Yes, there are some great shows coming back, but there are some newbies to look forward to as well! Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has teamed up with Chris Pine for a six-part series entitled I Am the Night, which is set for release at the end of January. Soon after, drama mastermind Ryan Murphy will bring another Hollywood story to life in the retelling of Bob Fosse’s relationship with Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon (played by Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams respectively) titled Fosse/Verdon in April. Lastly, George Clooney will return to television with Catch–22 about Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier, this summer.
Now You See It
The year will end with a spectacular celestial moment in the form of a solar eclipse on December 26th that can be seen by those living in the Middle East. The moon will pass between the earth and the sun, and is estimated to last approximately three and a half minutes. Here’s hoping there won’t be any astrological side effects from this annular eclipse.
