The Emmys Delight and Disappoint
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards was the least watched edition in the event’s history. Hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost of SNL, it started with a skit about the notorious lack of diversity at the Emmys, and then went on to award statuettes to a line-up of predominantly white nominees. On the red carpet, 14-year-old actress Millie Bobby Brown unwittingly started a controversy when she revealed that she and 31-year-old rapper Drake frequently send each other texts that say things like, “I miss you so much.”
On the winning side were the actual winners, like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (which scooped five wins) and Game of Thrones (which won for Outstanding Drama Series). Regina King won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Seven Seconds and won our hearts with her stunned, emotional reaction. Henry Winkler also charmed audiences worldwide with his acceptance speech after four decades’ worth of notable roles finally culminated in his first Emmy win for his role in Barry. But the best moment of the night happened when director Glenn Weiss turned his acceptance speech into a surprise proposal, prompting some of the evening’s best moments – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Meghan Markle Launches Her First Official Project
Meghan Markle has released news of her first official project as a royal, and it took everyone by surprise. In May 2019, with the support of Markle, the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire will release a collection of recipes called Together: Our Community Cookbook, containing 50 recipes.
In the forward to the book, Markle wrote, “I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry, and cook together. Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy – in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or joy – something we can all relate to.”
Rihanna Is Named Ambassador to Barbados
Last week, Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, announced Rihanna as the country’s new “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary”. The role includes the responsibility of promoting education, tourism, and investment for the popstar’s home island.
In a statement to the press, Rihanna shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud to take on such a prestigious title in my home country. Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I’m ready and excited to take on the responsibility. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and her team to reimagine Barbados.”
Chinese Actress Fan BingBing Goes Missing
She might not be familiar to you, but she is China’s most famous actress. Fan BingBing, global fashion icon and one of China’s highest paid talents, is missing and was last seen on July 1st. It sounds like a plot to the type of action movie she typically stars in, but BingBing’s disappearance is a frightening reality – it’s akin to someone like Jennifer Lawrence disappearing without a trace.
After a scandal involving tax fraud and unreported earnings, the actress has not been seen in public in two months. Chillingly, the Chinese government wrote an article in China Securities Daily that BingBing had been “placed under control and will accept legal judgement”, but the story was quickly deleted. Fans are worried about her, and a hashtag celebrating her birthday last week garnered over 64 million views and more than 30,000 comments. Clearly, she cannot be so easily erased.
Halloween Costume Inspired by The Handmaid's Tale Sparks Backlash
The Handmaid’s Tale, a bleak dystopian story adapted from Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel, proposes a future that doesn’t seem impossible. With a totalitarian, hyper-religious regime installed in America, the show’s main characters must fight to survive as they are treated as servile “handmaids” who are violently forced to produce offspring for its most prestigious families. The handmaids are forced to wear red, cloaked costumes and giant face-obscuring hats that signify their status.
For some reason, a retailer named Yandy released a sexy version of this costume, calling it the ‘Brave Red Maven’ costume. Based on a show that decries the objectification of women, the decision to make this costume defies explanation. The internet backlash was swift and severe, causing Yandy to pull the costume.
