We get it. We can barely keep up with the onslaught of information ourselves. That being said, it’s our mission to keep readers in the know, which is why we’ve combed through it all, distilled it to its essence, and dispensed it into easily digestible tidbits. Want to be the most knowledgeable culture savant in your group of friends? Then check back every Sunday for what you’ve missed in the world of celebrities and fashion.

Rapper Mac Miller Dead at 26

After a prolonged battle with addiction and substance abuse, rapper Mac Miller died of a suspected overdose on Friday afternoon at the age of 26. Miller, best known for his groundbreaking mixtapes like K.I.D.S. and Best Day Ever, was a beloved member of the rap community – not only was he the first artist to take Chance the Rapper on tour, but he also collaborated with dozens of rap’s most famous names and was praised for being a positive force in the industry.

Celebrities and fellow rappers took to social media to remember his powerful contributions to the rap genre, and mourn his untimely death. Ariana Grande, his ex-girlfriend, had to disable the comments section on her Instagram account after trolls started to accuse her of causing Miller’s alleged overdose.

Burt Reynolds Dead at 82

Legendary actor Burt Reynolds passed away on Thursday of cardio-pulmonary arrest at the age of 82. As one of the most popular celebrities of the 1970s and 1980s, he carved a name for himself as an onscreen action hero and ladies’ man in films like Smokey and the Bandit and The Dukes of Hazzard.

Reynolds was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Anderson’s cult film, Boogie Nights. He is especially remembered for the sense of fun he brought to the projects he worked on, even noting at the end of his memoir: “Well, so far, so good. I know I’m old, but I feel young. And there’s one thing they can never take away: nobody had more fun than I did.”

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj Brawl at Fashion Week

It wouldn’t be New York Fashion Week without some kind of drama, but suffice to say, no one saw this going down: feuding female rappers Cardi B and Nicki Minaj confronted each other in a physical altercation, reportedly over Minaj’s negative commentary aimed at Cardi B’s new baby girl, Kulture. In classic Cardi B style, she went after Minaj with an Elie Saab shoe, throwing it at her and catching a return elbow to the face.

Normally, we wouldn’t report on such a salacious news item, but this time, we’re holding it up as an example of how women have been wrongly conditioned to view each other as the enemy. This behavior is beyond disappointing, especially from two powerful women who could enact real change if they choose to lift each other up instead of tear each other down.

Nike Upsets Bigots by Casting Colin Kaepernick

In a highly controversial move, athletic brand Nike tapped former NFL star Colin Kaerpernick to star in the commercial for its “Just Do It” campaign’s 30th anniversary. Kaerpernick has stoked the ire of far-right conservatives in the US by choosing to kneel during the national anthem at the opening of NFL football games in protest of police brutality against black Americans. Although he is one of the league’s most talented starting quarterbacks, there is evidence that the NFL and its owners have blacklisted Kaepernick after his protests sparked a nationwide movement; he became a free agent in 2017 and was not approached by any teams for signing.

When Nike chose to make Kaerpernick the star of its campaign, it saw an immediate backlash on social media, with some going so far as to burn their Nike gear. This short-sighted response looks straight past the fact that the individuals had already given Nike their money by paying for the gear in the first place. Nike’s online sales jumped 31% after the commercial went live.

Celine Gets a Controversial Logo Update

Hedi Slimane has a distinct way of coming into a heritage brand and remaking it in his own image. At Saint Laurent, he famously dropped the “Yves”, and he is making waves once more by rebranding Celine with a fresh logo that erases the accent aigu over the first “e”. These rebranding overhauls are massive as they require all merchandise, tags, store signage, and other logo’d surfaces to be completely remade.

Although the rebranding choice was simple on the surface, there has already been a backlash to it, with some individuals even going so far as to track down the new Celine teaser imagery posted around major metropolises like New York City, and adding the accent aigu back by hand. Slimane was also criticized for completely deleting all of Celine’s Instagram posts, which some have viewed as an attempt to erase Phoebe Philo’s work from the brand’s history.

Chanel Announces Locations of Cruise and Métiers d’Art

This week, Chanel announced that it will show its Cruise 2019 collection on October 31st in Bangkok. The event – which centered on a life-size cruise ship and was first shown at the Grand Palais in Paris in May – will find a new setting on the banks of the Chao Phraya river.

Chanel travels again for its annual Métiers d’Art collection, this time to New York City at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on December 4th. Its Métiers d’Art shows are always held at places of historical importance for the brand, and this year’s choice reflects Mademoiselle Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s first trip to the city in 1931.
