Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas – this has been the summer of surprising celebrity engagements. After barely dating, these couples are racing to the altar, prompting mixed reactions ranging from total skepticism to total support from fans. Is it something in the water or do they know something we don’t?
In the Western world, young adults are not only waiting longer to get married, but also being more selective about their partners. When it comes to tying the knot, the median age for men is now 29.5, while women are waiting until the age of 27.4 – the highest average ages on record according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So why are these celebrities in a rush to wed?
Regardless of the reasons, the multiple engagements of Summer 2018 got us thinking about who might be next to make the big announcement. Take these predictions with a grain of salt – we might be experts at forecasting future trends, but celebrity relationships remain more of a mystery.
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott
After breaking up with Tyga in 2017, Kylie Jenner bounced straight into a new relationship with rapper Travis Scott. At the time, the 20-year-old “self-made billionaire” seemed to exhibit all the signs of rebounding from a serious relationship, but quickly got more serious with Scott than she had ever been with Tyga.
Jenner and Scott recently had a child together, and he also featured her in a music video for a song of his new album, Astroworld. If that wasn’t enough, he bought her a classic Rolls-Royce for her 21st birthday. We’re predicting that a giant, doorknob-sized diamond is coming next because this is one couple that can’t do anything subtly.
Bella Hadid and The Weeknd
Yes, we ‘ship Bella Hadid and The Weeknd so hard. Even though celebrity relationships are pretty far down the list of things we actually care about, it’s hard not to love this beautiful and supremely talented twosome. It seems like they’re taking things slow, but if there’s one engagement we’d actually be thrilled to see happen quickly, it’s this one.
Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams
There is at least one good result of the trainwreck that is The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, and his name is Wells Adams. As a refreshingly real human with a normal physique, a cool job (he’s a popular radio DJ in Nashville), an amazing sense of humor, and great taste in music (his favorite band is Talking Heads), he is one of the few non-bros to ever grace The Bachelorette – except that he was booted pretty early on in Season 21.
Now, he’s properly boo’d up with a worthy woman. The gorgeous Sarah Hyland, who co-stars in Modern Family, is also refreshingly real and hilarious. We’re actually a fan of their lovey-dovey posts on IG because, for once, the relationship seems truly genuine.
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse
Fans of Riverdale are witnessing life imitate art in a big way. The wildly popular Netflix series is a brooding, modern retelling of the classic Archie comics series, which featured a relationship between lovable goofball Jughead and blonde babe Betty Cooper.
In the television adaptation, things are a lot steamier and more dramatic, which is why fans are going crazy over the news that Lili Reinhart (who plays Betty) and Cole Sprouse (who plays Jughead) are romantically involved IRL. We smell a spinoff if they get hitched.
Grimes and Elon Musk
When billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk and avant-garde electronic music darling Grimes walked the Met Gala 2018 red carpet together, it caused a record-scratch sound heard around the world. Excuse me? Come again? How did the two even meet? What are their conversations like? Is this more evidence that we’ve split off into an alternate reality?
As one of the trendiest couples we’ve ever seen, we are convinced that they’re close to imitating their fellow celebrity peers by getting hitched in no time. We’re also betting good money that he does something crazy when he proposes, like buying her an entire galaxy instead of just a diamond ring.
