We get it. We can barely keep up with the onslaught of information ourselves. That being said, it’s our mission to keep readers in the know, which is why we’ve combed through it all, distilled it to its essence, and dispensed it into easily digestible tidbits. Karlie Kloss Announces Engagement to Joshua Kushner
She’s a supermodel, she’s a coder, and now she’s a future Kushner. This week, Karlie Kloss took to Instagram to share the news of her impending nuptials to Joshua Kushner (the younger, less-notorious venture capitalist brother of Jared Kushner) after dating for six years.
Ivanka Trump Shutters Fashion Brand
Ivanka Trump has decided to shutter her eponymous fashion brand. In a statement to the press, she said, “When we first started this brand, no one could have predicted the success that we would achieve. After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.”
However, this statement conveniently ignores the copyright infringement lawsuits, reports of abuse at the Chinese factories that produced her brand, and plunging sales figures that have plagued her company since her father became president.
R. Kelly is Canceled
R. Kelly has a troubled past – to put it mildly. Not only did he marry Aaliyah when she was underage, but he has also been taken to court over multiple inappropriate interactions with underage women. Most recently, it came to light that he was keeping six women in his Atlanta home away from their families, controlling everything from their wardrobes and diets to whom they could speak to.
After Spotify dropped him from their algorithm and his performance was canceled at multiple music festivals in 2018, Kelly has lashed back at the media and his accusers with a new 19-minute song released this week that excuses his terrible behavior and blames it on women “chasing” him. We’ll spare you the pain of having to listen to this song by summing it up in our own version: It’s the remix to ignition / send R. Kelly to prison.
Kuwaiti Influencer Comes Under Fire for Myopic Comments
Kuwaiti influencer Sondos Alqattan posted a now-deleted video last week denouncing new regulations in Kuwait that protect domestic workers from the Philippines by ensuring they are properly housed and fed, given one day off a week, and able to retain their passports. Alqattan criticized the regulations, saying, “How can you have a servant at home who keeps their own passport with them? What’s worse is they have one day off every week. If they run away and go back to their country, who will refund me? Honestly I disagree with this law. I don’t want a Filipino maid any more.”
Her ugly comments provoked an immediate backlash, which included multiple beauty brands such as MAC and Max Factor Arabia severing ties with the influencer. To make matters worse, Alqattan issued another statement (a not-so-apologetic apology of sorts) that defended her view. She has come out again, stating that any criticism of her was an attack on Islam, hijab, and the country of Kuwait.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Are Engaged
Priyanka Chopra, 35, and Nick Jonas, 25, started officially dating two months ago, and have already announced their engagement. Considering this comes on the heels of other quickie celebrity engagements like Ariana Grande/Pete Davidson and Hailey Baldwin/Justin Bieber, we’re starting to get (a little) less surprised at the speed with which celebrities are dashing to the altar.
Michelle Williams Quietly Weds Phil Elverum
The notoriously private Michelle Williams also has nuptial news this week. In a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks, New York, the actress wed singer-songwriter Phil Elverum of the band Mount Eerie. Like Williams – who dated the late Heath Ledger – Elverum had also experienced tragedy, thereby creating an instant bond between the two. His wife Geneviève Castrée died of stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2015. Williams has called their relationship “very sacred and very special”.
Dubai Design District Unveils "Design for Good" Initiative
D3 has launched a new initiative in conjunction with Dubai Cares called Design 100. The initiative invites designers from across the UAE to create a piece of furniture or an object that will eventually be produced and sold to the general public. The pieces must be functional, designed to inspire, and created in conjunction with Sheikh Zayed’s beliefs.
Design 100 will produce 100 limited-edition pieces that will also be showcased as part of Dubai Design Week. The submission deadline is August 16th, and proposals can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. More information can be found here.
