From what we buy and wear to how we style our hair, celebrities influence so many aspects of our lives – mostly the shallow aspects. However, a new trend among celebrities has us reaching for the written word instead of makeup palettes.

Reese Witherspoon has been especially instrumental in forging a new appreciation for the written word, often appearing on her Instagram to promote a beloved new book. She’s even gone so far as to star in the on-screen versions of her favorite tomes (see: Big Little Lies) and adapt some of them into films or television series (see: Luckiest Girl Alive and Little Fires Everywhere, respectively). Sarah Jessica Parker has also joined the #MakeReadingCoolAgain movement with her new book imprint, SJP for Hogarth.

If you’re looking for a few new books to add to your summer reading list, look no further than these three celebrity-endorsed novels.

A Place for Us

by Fatima Farheen Mirza

A Place for Us is the first novel published by Sarah Jessica Parker’s new book imprint, SJP for Hogarth, and also happens to be the debut work by the author Fatima Farheen Mirza. This saga tells the story of an Indian-Muslim family living in California that is preparing for a wedding. As the special day approaches, the family anticipates welcoming home their estranged son, Amar. The skillfully narrated novel recalls Amar’s life growing up with his sisters Hadia and Huda, and the bond they share due to their father’s strict parenting. Eventually, Amar “betrays” the family by falling in love with Amira, the daughter of her father’s rival, which introduces a Romeo and Juliet underlying plot to explain his eventual estrangement. With beautifully rendered characters, Mirza explores family dynamics, and what it means to be a part of family while struggling to retain individuality.

Neverworld Wake

Even though this is technically a YA novel, the sophisticated storytelling will suck you in, regardless of age. Neverworld Wake tells the compelling story of Beatrice Hartley and her five best friends. They’re the cool kids, the kids everyone at Darrow-Harker School want to be. When Beatrice’s boyfriend and one of the members of the group, Jim, dies suddenly, she is sent into a lonely spiral. One year later, the group visit a seaside estate where they would hang out and make plans for the future, searching for closure with Jim’s death. What they find is a mystery man who calls himself the Keeper knocking on the door one night. He traps them in a terrifying Groundhog’s Day-like existence, forcing them to make harrowing decisions that will determine who can return to the land of the living. This eery novel will haunt you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Something in the Water

Something in the Water is an intense psychological thriller that drops you into the thick of things before rewinding to reveal the set-up, with twists and turns aplenty along the way. The vividly detailed story centers on Erin and Mark, a young couple that is in the midst of planning their wedding when Mark suddenly loses his high-paying job. This results in a scaled-back honeymoon to Bora Bora, where the couple suddenly finds something underwater while scuba-diving together. What they find forces them to make a critical choice whether or not to keep their findings a secret, ultimately unleashing a chain of events so shocking you won’t be able to put the book down.
