Rihanna dressed as the pope, Madonna returning to her “Like a Prayer” roots, and the likes of Miley Cyrus and Zoë Kravitz making the news for their skimpy ensembles can only mean one thing: fashion’s most ‘religious’ night is upon us.

The theme of this year’s long-awaited Met Gala was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Cue an array of rosaries, crosses, gloves, and even papal headdresses. But despite the sheer star quotient translating to some truly imaginative looks, there was a handful of celebrity moments that actually had nothing to do with what they were wearing. Here, we pay tribute to those who proposed, debuted, and taught us what Florida Water is.

Red-Carpet Comeback

If you’re going to pick an event to come back to the red carpet in style, the Met Gala is it – and clearly Kylie Jenner was of the same opinion. This was also the reality star’s red-carpet debut with rapper Travis Scott, except it was her teeny, tiny, gem-covered glasses that got all the attention. But who needs to see when all eyes are on you, anyway?

Near Miss

The fashion world can’t seem to get over Katy Perry’s OTT angel wings, but what few know is that she almost didn’t make it to the gala. Leave it to TMZ to report on the fact that the popstar’s vintage car temporarily broke down on the way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art until a couple of prayers kicked in and the sputtering engine came back to life.

Let the Memes Begin

Sheer fabric, ruffle detailing, and plenty of drama – let’s preface this by saying that Selena Gomez’s dress by Coach was not the problem. Her bronzer overload though? A whole other story. And it didn’t take Twitter long to respond.

Double Debut

Dripping in jewels and with designer Jeremy Scott in tow, a very pregnant Cardi B made her debut at the Met Gala. She was even spotted chatting with rapper Nicki Minaj, putting those rumors of an ongoing feud to rest. Also in attendance for the first time? American singer-actress Ariana Grande.

Who Hid Beyoncé?

Queen Bey skipped the Met Gala for the second year in a row, prompting comments ranging from “Where are you? I’m pissed” to “This is the only thing I’ve been looking forward to since after Beychella” on her last Instagram post. It has been reported that the popstar was supposed to be in attendance, but Jay-Z booked her a surprise holiday instead.

Love Is on Those Stairs

The steps of the Met Gala always manage to host some type of pop-culture moment, and 2018 is no exception. This time around, rapper 2 Chainz got down on one knee, proposing to his partner of five years, Nakesha Ward. The two already have three children together and, after last night’s romantic gesture, plan to wed later this year.

Solange on Symbolism

Earlier this year, we were educated on the term “inclusion rider” thanks to Frances McDormand’s win at the 2018 Oscars. And now we’re even wiser, courtesy of the Knowles sister who showed up.

While it was her sculptural black dress, thigh-high boots, and gold halo that drew the eye, it was the contents of her fishnet bag that had the world talking: a bottle of Florida Water. The cologne of sorts claims to have “both spiritual and practical purposes” and is used for everything ranging from Wiccan rituals and voodoo practices to keeping sadness at bay. Who knew?
