“Daringly different” Indian restaurant Masti and wellness platform Core 8 have joined forces to host a month-long Holistic Yoga series. May 2: See Him Spin
You know him from Luther and The Wire – now see him spin at superclub Gotha. We are, of course, talking about Idris Elba. It’s no surprise that the Golden Globe-winning actor moonlights as a DJ across the globe, and he’s bringing his skills to the city for one night only, kicking his set off at 11 p.m. Even better? May 2 to 5: Laugh Aloud
If you grew up devouring the talent of Monty Python, you’re in luck as West End stage show Spamalot is coming to Dubai Opera. The first ever comedy to be held at the already-iconic venue, it is a spin-off of the 1975 classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Expect to see King Arthur – Knights of the Round Table in tow – on his quest to find ancient treasure, encountering killer rabbits and ferocious Frenchmen along the way. Buy your tickets here.
May 3 to 6: Go Grey
Fashion forces Natalia Shustova and Nadine Kabbara have come together to launch GREY SPACE, which they describe as “a platform for fundamental creativity”. Intrigued? Check out their debut pop-up taking place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Central Park Towers. The event will present a highly curated selection of international talents alongside a new generation of makers – Vanina, Reemami, and Amr Saad included.
May 4: Party Hard
Hosted by Emirates Golf Club, electronic- and dance-music event Groove on the Grass is wrapping up its sixth season with a bang, welcoming live bands and DJ sets by Apparat, Max Cooper, HVOB, and Maribou State amongst others. May 5: Commemorate Mexico
If you’re looking to celebrate the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla – because why not – head to one of the many fiestas happening around town. Loca will be hosting a five-hour brunch, complete with games such as the Bingo-esque game of chance, Lotería. Meanwhile, live music and a capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art) display can be caught alongside a Mexican costume competition and special dishes at Cactus Jacks.
May 5 to 26: Return to Ripe
With the scorching summer inching closer, Ripe Market – the city’s favorite al fresco market – has taken up residence indoors at Times Square Center. Spend your time leisurely browsing fashion, jewelry, and craft stalls and picking up organic, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables. It runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
May 6 to 10: Buy an “It” Bag
In honor of the new Burberry ‘Belt’ bag, the British luxury label will take over The Farjam Foundation in DIFC with a bespoke setting named The Burberry Conservatory. This temporary space will allow visitors to discover the belted tote – which, of course, is influenced by Burberry’s iconic trench coat – and shop the new collection in surroundings inspired by an English summer garden.
May 10: Take a Walk
Explore a side of Dubai you may not have seen with an Unseen Trail by the name of Naif by Night. Jointly hosted by Gulf Photo Plus and Frying Pan Adventures, this five-hour trek is ideal for food and photography enthusiasts alike as it comes rife with photography tips and the finest food that Old Dubai has to offer. May 11: Explore Hypnosis
Hypnosis meets motivational mind-reading and storytelling in this one-woman show entitled The Mentalist featuring Juliet Arndt. Taking place at The Junction, it promises to mesmerize audiences as she reads your mind, knows the name of your best friend, or guesses a secret pin code. May 11: Listen Up
For fans of rock music, the Stereophonics need no introduction. The beloved Welsh band returns to Dubai as part of their latest world tour, celebrating both 20 years since their debut record was released and the launch of their tenth studio album, Scream Above the Sounds. May 13 to June 15: Think Local
Throughout the month of Ramadan, multi-disciplinary venue Nadi Al Quoz in Alserkal Avenue will be taken over by homegrown boutiques and brands such as Jumeirah Road offering their unique products. The pop-up event will take place daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. While you’re there, be sure to check out Hale Tenger’s ‘Under’, an immersive mixed-media installation that explores aspects of human behavior and systems of control. It’s on view in The Yard until May 31st.
May 15: Usher in Ramadan
Ramadan is expected to begin on May 15th, and Savoir Flair is along for the ride. We’ll be covering everything from unique iftar destinations to all things health and wellness during the holy month – think: how to hydrate your skin while fasting, the optimal time to work out, and more. You can also expect to see a round-up of the best activities and events taking place across the city, so watch this space.
May 17 to September 8: Get Fit
With temperatures soaring, fitness freaks are headed inside – Dubai Sports World, to be exact. The city’s largest indoor sports venue will span over 25,000 square meters of air conditioned space at Dubai World Trade Centre, hosting a wide array of activities. You can participate in everything from basketball and badminton to virtual golf and a ninja-warrior course. Entrance is free, but you’ll have to pre-register here.
May 18: Break a Sweat
This one’s for you runners out there: Run The Track wraps up at Dubai Autodrome with Ramadan Night Run. Kicking off at 7.45 p.m., this community event will welcome everyone from first-time social runners to the country’s finest athletes. There will be three distances – 10km, 5km, and 3km – to choose from and you’ll be rewarded a bespoke event medal at the finish line, regardless of which you pick. You can register for the race here.
May 18: Feel Like Royalty
You’ve watched Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s courtship – now celebrate their upcoming nuptials at Windsor Castle as beloved gastropub Reform Social & Grill hosts Meghan’s Hen Party (complete with Reform’s famous air-conditioned tent) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This particular celebration is for ladies only, so get the girls together and brunch things up in (regal) style. May 19: Watch Them Wed
Dubai seems to have caught Royal Wedding fever and, luckily for us, there are several venues screening the big event. Head to Breeze Beach Grill in Club Vista Mare or The Clubhouse in Jebel Ali Recreation Club, where the live stream will kick off at 3 p.m. For a feast themed to the occasion, Geales will host a brunch rife with British classics like roast beef from 12.30 p.m. onwards alongside a live screening of the royal nuptials.
May 21: Please Your Palate
Raise your hand if you have no idea what the term “single origin” means – and join the Cocoa & Coffee: Tasting Beans workshop hosted collectively by Zero Four Specialty Coffee and artisanal chocolate factory Mirzam at Alserkal Avenue. Home and Soul, a concept store on Al Wasl Road that stocks gorgeous furniture and home accessories, will host a Ramadan Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. across two days. Expect to shop décor items all the way from Bali, potted plants by The Habitat, fashion jewelry by La Plage, rustic home accents by ABODE, and more – all while sipping specialty coffee by Fiks.
May 23 to June 13: Support a Cause
Jazz up a mundane Wednesday by ziplining through Dubai Marina as XLine launches night runs to benefit Al Jalila Foundation as part of its #DareToDonate campaign, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to charity. The adrenalin-packed experience is limited to just four Wednesdays in a row, so act fast. The night runs are priced at AED 850 and can be booked here.
May 24: Catch a Classic
Vintage Film Night returns at Courtyard Playhouse and, this month, it will delight romcom fans with a free screening of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Loosely based on Truman Capote’s novella of the same name, the beloved 1961 movie stars Audrey Hepburn and is an absolute must-watch. It will be introduced by the venue’s resident classic-film expert Jessica Pratt, adding to the flavor of the night, so be sure to RSVP in advance here.
May 26: Dream Bigger
To get a better sense of your past, present, and future self, The Workshop is where it’s at.
