Live volcanoes, forests filled with history, family-owned rice paddies that span for miles, and some of the most breathtaking hotels in the world – Ubud, Bali is a town like no other. In contrast to backpacker-centric towns like Canggu or Seminyak, Ubud is a veritable paradise for honeymooners as it is located in the center of Bali’s rainforest district, completely away from any hustle and bustle the city brings.
One of the most rural destinations on the Indonesian island, Ubud is also an adventure-filled spot, home to some of the Bali’s most interesting wildlife and tranquil resorts. The hotels here are guaranteed to have one thing in common: utmost serenity. Having said that, no property exposes you to all this mountainous town has to offer quite like Alila Ubud.
Location, Location, Location
Bali has fast become a must-visit destination due to its perfect balance of history and hedonism. But in contrast to some of the livelier towns, Ubud has become the perfect choice for those looking to truly escape and unwind. Alila Ubud is a boutique property with a difference, sitting hilltop and looking down on the vast valley below.
Set high in the Payangan forest (which is still home to monkeys, lizards, and an abundance of creepy crawlies), this hotel brings total luxury to a historical village. The hotel offers stunning views of Mount Batur – and the River Ayung that runs through it – and sits just a 70-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport in the capital, Denpasar.
The property is 12 years old, but the mix of traditional architecture and contemporary luxury design means the décor is completely timeless. The hotel boats 74 rooms, split between superior and deluxe rooms, valley-view villas, and a two-bedroom villa with private pool. Each room is as gorgeous as the last, but the villas provide complete privacy (perfect for honeymooners or guests who prefer to stay somewhere a little more intimate) and wraparound balconies that provide unbelievable 180-degree views of the valley ahead.
Sunken outdoor baths, rich dark wood, and plenty of natural light decorate the interiors, and there are unforgettable details everywhere you turn. Warning: Don’t be surprised if your sunset drinks for two are interrupted by some furry (but friendly) creatures!
Rest and Relaxation
At Alila Ubud, the 25-meter infinity pool and miles of uninterrupted fauna are enough to send your body into complete relaxation mode, but if that isn’t enough, the on-site spa will do the trick. Following the outdoor theme that runs throughout all bathrooms, the couples’ massage area is open to the elements and provides the soundtrack of humming birds and gentle winds while therapists knead away any remaining stress.
Of course, the traditional Balinese massage is a must-try if you’re the type of person who enjoys pampering herself and her loved ones. And if you want to take a piece of the experience away with you, the organic bath and body products are all available to purchase after your treatment.
Dining with a Difference
Plantation Restaurant, the hotel’s main eatery, offers dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, you can expect a delectable spread of breads, pastries, and smoothies as well as made-to-order hot dishes. For dinner, traditional Balinese dishes are flavorful and varied, offering delicious options for vegetarians, carnivores, and even those who prefer to dine light. Save room for dessert because the selection here is seasonal and sensational.
And if that wasn’t enough to tickle your taste buds, diners can organise a private romantic dinner with the leisure concierge. Set poolside, the dinner takes place on a completely private decking, away from other guests and overlooking the valley. Tea lights sit along each step, paving the way to the beautifully decorated dining area, complete with drapes and lanterns. A personal butler will fulfill your every need and serve a tailor-made menu that is discussed with the chef prior to your evening.
During my stay, the hotel arranged a private dinner with my other half who, to my surprise, proposed on our final night there. The hotel could not have done enough to make the moment as special and memorable as possible, even down to providing us with our own WiFi router so that we could contact our families after the engagement!
Going the Extra Mile
As with all Alila properties, attention to detail and service sets this hotel apart from others. As soon as you’re collected from the airport, the staff will go over and above to make your stay utterly memorable – from greeting you by name when passing you in the hall to having your favorite drink ready before you even open a menu, the team ensures that you live like royalty.
My favorite detail? The endless supply of insect repellent placed around the hotel. You’ll need it, trust me!
