Bustling streets lined with tropical foliage, hipster cafes serving the finest raw fare Asia has to offer, and tribes of surfer boys and beach babes catching epic waves — Bali is a paradise in epic proportions. But of all the Balinese towns, no other offers the balance of tranquility and chaos quite like the Southern city, Seminyak.
One of the most popular destinations on the Indonesian island, Seminyak is home to some of the most luxurious resorts, each of which are dotted across the coastline, and enveloped in buzzing bars, quaint eateries, and low-key spots to catch the breathtakingly beautiful sunset. When in comes to hotels, you’re certainly spoilt for choice, but one property stands out from the rest every single time.
Enter: Alila Seminyak.
Location, Location, Location
The perfect mix of bustle and balmy serenity, Bali has fast become a bucket-list destination for many over the past five years. But as the island becomes increasingly popular, there’s no time like the present to visit before the unspoilt becomes, well, spoilt.
At just three years old, Alila Seminyak is a fairly recent property, but the architecture and attention to detail mean this newly-built resort encapsulates the history of the town. Set along the beach that stretches north from Kuta and Legiant with views of the Indian Ocean, the hotel sits about 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport in the capital, Denpasar.
Being a modern property, the rooms at Alila are contemporary luxury at its finest, whilst still managing to incorporate subtle details synonymous with typical Balinese architecture. Dark chocolate-colored wood is used on all furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows let in oodles of light, and tropical green foliage engulfs the architecture, so you never feel too far from nature.
The hotel boasts 240 rooms, split between standard rooms, suites, and one impressive penthouse, but despite its vastness, the property remains intimate — and once you’re inside your room, you’ll forget about the loud hum from the wildlife outside. Tip: Opt for a sea view. The sunsets are beyond breathtaking, and it’s truly special to witness them from your balcony.
At Alila Seminyak, the infinity pools, sea-front bars, and beautiful bedrooms are more than enough reason to never leave the resort (or even your room), but if you’re the type that gets itchy feet, the hotel offers places to go and things to do, too. Alila’s extensive experience menu is suited to all types of vacationers. There are shopping sprees for the spendthrifts, religious offerings for the cultured, and scenic cycles for the active. We opted for the ‘Inspirational Bali’ tour, which was a brilliant way to experience just a tiny snippet of all the culture this island has to offer.
The day begins by changing into traditional Balinese dress (a colorful sarong for women and a headpiece for men), before proceeding to the on-site temple, where you’ll learn how to make Hindu offerings, before finishing at a local temple, where you’ll partake in prayer and receive a blessing.
If you’re more into wellness, you can enjoy a complimentary daily yoga session in the Movement Studio, visit the stunning spa for an authentic Balinese massage, or simple make good use of the surroundings with a leisurely morning stroll.
When it comes to picking a resort in Bali, you’re spoilt for choice. But Alila truly offers something special to its guests that you won’t find elsewhere: unrivalled service. As soon as you’re collected from the airport, staff cannot do enough for you, and will constantly try to go over and above to make your stay totally memorable (as if it wasn’t already).
From remembering your names when passing in the hall, to already having your favorite drink on hand at the beach bars and restaurants, the team ensures you live like royalty during your entire stay. A favorite detail of ours was the endless supply of signature Alila toiletries and insect repellents placed around the hotel (you’ll need it, trust me!)
