The topic of social media – Instagram in particular – is one that dominates conversations in the Savoir Flair office, with editors frequently weighing its pros against its cons. While we love discovering cult fashion brands and kooky beauty trends through Instagram, we’re all too aware of its role in cyber-bullying, compromised privacy, decreased productivity, and low self-esteem caused by endless comparison with those who share only a sliver of their lives.
One community on this social-media platform, however, is defying the odds: #bookstagram. Initially started as a place to share a love of books and one’s current reading situation, it has quickly developed its reputation as being one that is warm, welcoming, and oh-so-real. “The biggest draw is how meaningful the connections formed through #bookstagram are – differences in age, race, gender, and profession feel irrelevant when you bond with a fellow bibliophile,” says @OasisGirlMD, who has gradually amassed over 36,600 followers by sharing her passion for must-read classics, limited-edition covers, and all things Harry Potter with the virtual world.
It also doesn’t hurt that a majority of the bookstagram community feels as strongly about making books look as beautiful as they are engaging, giving us gorgeous visuals in the process. Case in point: the books-and-brews combination. A quick scroll through the round-up below, and you’ll see exactly what we mean.
