2017 felt like a year packed to the brim with contradictions.

Whether directly or indirectly, Donald Trump dominated the news from start to finish – people looked up the word “covfefe” in bewilderment, Alec Baldwin was finally recognized for his comedic portrayal of the US president on Saturday Night Live, and sorry-not-sorry Kathy Griffin faced relentless backlash after posting a clip of a (fake) bloody head depicting Trump on her Twitter account.

In stark contrast, “feminism” was announced as Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year for 2017 – and for good reason. Two female-driven TV shows (Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale) swept the Emmys, the women of Hollywood finally took a stand against the sexual misconduct carried out by its most powerful men, the #MeToo movement gave a voice of victims of assault worldwide, and an outspoken feminist joined the British royal family. Here, Savoir Flair recaps the nine awkward, endearing, and unexpected pop culture moments that defined this roller coaster of a year.

That Unforgettable Flub

Creating a face-palm moment that we’ll remember for years to come, La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner in the Best Picture category at the Oscars by Warren Beatty, who was caught in the mix-up after pulling the cue card for Best Actress (won by Emma Stone for La La Land). The real victor was, in fact, Moonlight – with the truth revealing itself after La La Land producers had started giving their speeches. Awkward.

Destiny’s Children

Leave it to Beyoncé to turn her pregnancy into art, turning to Instagram, floral garlands, and a handful of elegant words to announce the impending arrival of her twins. The post was officially declared the single most-liked post of this year, according to Instagram – and spurred countless Halloween costumes in 2017.

Scandal, Hollywood Edition

Once the predatory behavior of film producer Harvey Weinstein towards actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Mira Sorvino was exposed, the #MeToo movement prompted a flood of stories from women who were sexually harassed by the likes of Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, and Louis CK. And in acknowledgment of these harrowing developments, actresses – both nominees and presenters – will wear all-black at the 75th annual Golden Globes on January 7th, 2018.

A Regal Affair

She’s a passionate humanitarian, a talented actress, and even an advocate for UN Women – and that’s why the world dubbed Prince Harry the “lucky one” when Kensington Palace confirmed his engagement to Meghan Markle on November 27th. And considering the excitement that swept the globe when the news broke, it seems like a distant memory when Kate Middleton confirmed that she is pregnant with her third child back in September.

New – and Improved?

Look what you made her do. Returning back into the public eye after a year of silence, Taylor Swift debuted a brand new look, a brand new album entitled Reputation, and a brand new single riddled with vengeful lyrics targeted at haters and ex-boyfriends alike. Swifties also revelled in the announcement of her upcoming world tour, which kicks off on May 8th, 2018.

Soda Gone Sour

All was right in the world again when Kendall Jenner approached a police officer with a can of soda in the midst of a protest – or so thought the folks at Pepsi when creating the commercial we’re unlikely to soon forget for its absurdity. Considering the extent to which it made light of those fighting against police brutality in America, the ad resulted in countless memes, one funnier than the next.

Girl Power

There are very few occasions capable of bringing together Hollywood heavy hitters such as Lena Dunham, Emma Watson, Amy Schumer, Kristen Stewart, and Natalie Portman – especially when an awards ceremony is nowhere on the horizon. The Women’s March in Washington DC on January 21st was one such occasion, with some of our favorite actresses marching peacefully alongside 500,000 other people to raise awareness for women’s rights.

Try Keeping Up

Kylie Jenner is “allegedly” pregnant. Khloe Kardashian is “allegedly” pregnant. Kim Kardashian is expecting via surrogate. And the most mind-blowing detail of this triple-pregnancy pact? Tabloids reported that momager Kris Jenner has been pushing for this “storyline” for years in a bid to restore the former popularity of Keeping Up with the Kardashians – and the fan reactions have been priceless.

A Friend Indeed

In a highly emotional Instagram post in the middle of September, Selena Gomez revealed that she had received a kidney transplant due to organ failure caused by lupus, thanking her friend Francia Raisa for the kidney donation that saved her life and encouraging her followers to learn more about the chronic inflammatory disease through Lupus Research Alliance.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.
