Dubai is a city with innovation at its heart. You only have to gaze up toward Business Bay’s newest skyscraper, look out over busy Sheikh Zayed Road, or step inside the latest concept space in Alserkal Avenue to revel in modernism. And it’s for this very reason that hotels like One&Only Royal Mirage are so treasured.
Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Dubai’s marina, this slice of authentic Arabia presents itself in the form of a beautiful, three-building establishment. It’s a welcome breath of fresh air and, once you’re inside, feels like true a hidden gem. Discover four reasons why this regal resort should be your next staycation choice.
Location, Location, Location
A stone’s throw from Dubai Marina, One&Only Royal Mirage is set back from the busy King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street. The residences are hidden amongst illustrious gardens and palm trees, meaning the hotel isn’t visible from the roadside – you’ll feel a million miles away from city life the second you step in.
The property sits upon a kilometer of soft-sand beach, overlooking the glittering lights of The Palm Island Bay on one side, and the iconic marina skyline on the other. It’s safe to say that you won’t be short of restaurants, bars, and lounges while staying here, but if itchy feet do set in, you don’t need to venture far to take in the neighborhood’s nightlife.
These aren’t your standard hotel grounds. Visitors have the choice of three types of accommodation spread across the stunning gardens. Palm trees, water fountains, and colorful flower beds weave between each establishment, creating a space that is made for those who love to wander. The Palace is considered the main part of the hotel and is abundant in outdoor elegance. There’s an Arabesque opulence to the entire property, but The Palace does this particularly well.
Next is the Arabian Court, which boasts lush swimming pools and beautiful views. Rounding off the trio is the Residence & Spa, where I stayed. This is the boutique sector of the grounds – it provides an intimate sanctuary by having its very own library, dining room, and private swimming pool. Most noteworthy, however, is the beautiful bathroom. Hidden behind two wooden sliding doors, the huge space revealed is breathtaking. A walk-in closet sits on the right, while a changing area with leather seating creates an impressive centerpiece. Ivory marble and rich spice tones help create a theme throughout, even down to the complimentary Molton Brown bath and body products.
Authentic Middle Eastern Dining
When it comes to food at One&Only, it’s a chance to really celebrate the region’s heritage and, quite literally, enjoy a taste of Arabia. Most of the property’s eight restaurants offer a menu inspired by the Middle East, but I chose to dine at Tagine. Truly Moroccan in both cuisine and atmosphere, it features colorful lanterns hanging from the ceiling and lighting the walkway into a cozy, dimly lit dining room before waiters greet you wearing traditional garb, complete with a fez hat.
As you could probably guess, the main part of the menu consists of delicious tagines that are served in ornate porcelain dishes. I chose the seafood and beef-kebab tagines, both of which managed to nail the right balance between the rich spices and the delicate taste of the star attraction. The seafood was fresh and full of flavor, while the beef is a great choice for those who appreciate a hearty comfort meal.
Rest and Relaxation
This hotel takes R&R very seriously, so it’s no surprise that the spa here is renowned for being one of the grandest in Dubai. Fit for royalty, the roster of treatments is created to “unwind, restore, and elevate the mind, body, and soul”. The spa’s architecture is a relaxing blend of enticing arches, intricate domes, and beautiful mosaics, so you’ll feel a sense of zen before you’ve even been pampered. Between the high ceilings, marble walls, and warm steam in the treatment rooms, it’s virtually impossible to hold onto any tension in your body.
While a wide choice of pampering, beauty, and spa treatments are on offer, the spa is most famous for ‘The Royal Hammam’ package. The expert tellaks – or masseuses – use the skills that have been honed over generations to deep-cleanse, scrub, and massage each guest with Moroccan soap and scented water. All of this takes place on a heated marble slab surrounded by rose petals, lit candles, and the sound of running water – absolutely idyllic.
