It’s official: we’re loco for lattes. First, it was latte art that we couldn’t get enough of, then it was matcha lattes and turmeric lattes taking over both our mornings and our Instagram feeds. Now, there’s a new kid in latte land – and it’s blue and vegan to boot.
Dubbed the ‘Smurf Latte’, this beverage features ginger, lemon, coconut milk, agave, and blue algae powder (note the complete absence of caffeine in the equation). The beverage was first introduced by Melbourne-based café Matcha Mylkbar, with Cracked Nut in Dublin and Nininio in Shanghai soon following suit. Chalk its immense popularity up to the fact that coffee drinkers love a good novelty factor or that blue algae is said to have powerful antioxidant properties.
However, the verdict is still out on how palatable it can be – the bright-blue ‘Smurf Latte’ has been described as everything from “bubble gummy sweet” to “reminiscent of sour milk”. Regardless, it’s downright Instagrammable – as proven by Savoir Flair’s roundup below.
