Did you know there is an Instagram account by the name of @everyoutfitonsatc dedicated to (you guessed it) documenting every single outfit ever worn on Sex and the City – from Samantha’s take-no-prisoners pantsuits to Carrie’s sometimes questionable choices? It’s true. And with over 300,000 followers and counting, one of them being Sarah Jessica Parker herself, the account has become somewhat of a cult hit.
Sarcastic, witty, and impressively thorough, the account is ultimately a tribute to the show’s iconic costume design. “Pat Field is such a genius that we felt like each outfit deserved their dues – even the boring Charlotte ones,” said fashion writer Lauren Garroni, one of the account’s co-founders, in an interview with Paper magazine. Still not convinced that it deserves a spot in your feed? Read on for seven reasons why Savoir Flair can’t get enough.
Revisiting Iconic Ensembles
“Every time you get near him, you turn into this pathetic, needy, insecure victim and the thing that pisses me off the most is that you’re more than willing to go right back for more,” were the harsh (but true) words uttered by Miranda when she and Carrie had a big fight over Big in a vintage store. Cut to Carrie falling into a pond and using the opportunity to turn Big’s shirt into a chic shirtdress – like only she could.
This oft-requested outfit really distills Carrie down to her purest form – improbable chic. It certainly is her most resourceful outfit of the series. The use of Mr. Big’s crisp white button-down (no doubt Brioni) and his Hermès belt to highlight her waist is pure genius. Perpetually on-trend, Carrie’s knack for deconstructing and elevating basics anticipates the design ethos of the Vetements collective, further reinforced by the excessive sleeve and belt length. Only Carrie could turn this sartorial tragedy (a ruined Richard Tyler bias-cut dress) into an opportunity to let the Upper East Side know she’s got great legs. We’re also here for the slutty Annie Hall vibes that this outfit gives us. But BEWARE FOLLOWERS, this is a look not to be tried at home 🚫(S3/EP18) #CarrieBradshaw #Vetements #Hermes #AnnieHallMoment
Debating (Again) Between Aidan and Big
Whether you’re on Team Big or Team Aidan, the fact of the matter is that one is slightly more well-dressed than the other – and, luckily for us, @everyoutfitonsatc has already picked apart the turquoise jewelry, rose-colored glasses, bandana-inspired shirts, and denim-on-denim looks worn by Aidan in several hilarious posts to date.
New year, new us? Brace yourselves: we actually enjoy this Aidan outfit. There is something about his white linen shirt with Mexican-style embroidery that just speaks to us. We could also be responding to the fact that he’s yelling at Carrie in this scene. Some might say that cheating is indefensible, but if Carrie’s dalliance with Mr. Big persuaded Aidan to put down the turquoise jewelry and stop hoarding denim like a Gen-X Jay Leno we couldn’t help but wonder: Are cheaters the new stylists? Recalling Big-Name Guest Appearances
Carrie Fisher, David Duchovny, Heidi Klum, Will Arnett, and Alan Cumming – all of them have made guest appearances on the beloved show, and this account is the perfect reminder of who has graced the screen alongside our favorite girls.
And All Those Spoofs
From SNL’s skit featuring Christina Aguilera as Samantha to Bea Arthur starring as Carrie in a parody of the show, there’s no shortage of Sex and the City spoofs out there, all lovingly embraced by this account via throwback posts.
The Constant Charlotte Bashing
No character on the show has been mocked as ruthlessly and as funnily as the sweet, lovable Charlotte. Several of the posts depicting her are NSFW, but the one below serves as a fine example. Side note: After filing for bankruptcy in 2014, beloved 90s brand Delia’s has returned as an online-only store!
Amongst Serious Moments of Fashion History
We’ve seen Carrie (briefly) date a politician and now – thanks to @everyoutfitonsatc – we know that her trench is suede, dates back to 1972, and comes from Halston by way of Issey Miyake.
LEGENDARY HALSTON MOMENT This is the shit that we live for. Carrie is wearing Halston’s ultrasuede trench (similar in style to the shirtwaist dress at right), which debuted in 1972 and swiftly became one of the most iconic pieces in the history of American sportswear. Halston was introduced to ultrasuede fabric the year before when he saw Issey Miyake wearing one of his own designs in Paris. We will definitely be writing some fanfic about that encounter later, btw. Anyway, we appreciate Carrie’s cosplay as a political side piece and / or ’70s-era Jackie O (S3/EP2) #CarrieBradshaw #Halston #Ultrasuede #IsseyMiyake
But, Above All, That Brutal Honesty
At the end of the day, @everyoutfitonsatc is a little bit like painfully honest comedian Louis C.K. – you think it, the girls behind the account will say it. It has mocked everything from the dullness of Aleksandr Petrovsky’s dinner party to Bunny’s passive-aggressive behavior and Stanford’s low self-esteem. And that’s why we love it.
🍼MOMMY DEAREST🍼 Is Miranda an unfit mother? She forced poor Brady to participate in a coordinated mother & son hat look en route to the Hamptons. Also his hat appears to be a fisherman / fedora hybrid which has to constitute some form of child abuse (S5/EP8) #MirandaHobbes #BradyHobbes #Twinning #FedoraLook
