Do you remember watching The Jetsons as a child and loving the sheer absurdity of it all? Well, prepare to feel incredibly old as the family car in this beloved cartoon may soon be a reality, right here in Dubai, in the form of a flying taxi. If you haven’t already heard about it, here’s what you need to know: the Ehang ‘184’ drone has rather fancily been dubbed the “Autonomous Aerial Vehicle” and is scheduled to become part of Dubai’s taxi fleet on a limited basis by this July, provided the safety-certification procedure has been completed.
For the nervous travelers out there, the good news is that each self-flying taxi will be fitted with advanced navigation technologies, with you entering your drop-off destination into the tablet within. Capable of operating one passenger for 23 minutes at just under 100 km/h and carrying up to 100kg, each driverless flying car will be auto-piloted, directed, and monitored via a command center.
And because this all probably sounds like something you need to see to believe – which we get – above is an official video released by the RTA, which actually shows the taxi in action. We’re already thinking four months into the future, anticipating how your life will change – for the better – once you’re actually able to hop aboard a flying taxi. And we have some theories.
Finish Getting Ready on Your Way to Work
Does the abrupt braking of your morning taxi in rush-hour traffic mess up your makeup application every single time? Never again.
Pretend Like You're in 'That' Ford Anglia
Who knew that a concept introduced by the RTA would allow you to embrace your inner nerd? Go ahead and pretend like you’re Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter series – you know you want to.
Make "Fashionably Early" a Thing
Being fashionably late is so passé. Yes, it worked for Marilyn Monroe, who once said, “I am invariably late for appointments, sometimes as much as two hours. I’ve tried to change my ways, but the things that make me late are too strong and too pleasing.” But it also got her fired from what is now known as her final, unfinished film Something’s Got to Give.
Get from A to B Without Road Rage
Living in Dubai can sometimes feel synonymous with suffering from road rage. One ride in a traffic-free sky, however, and you’ll achieve a zen-like state in no time.
Reach a Sample Sale Faster
You know that chaos that usually awaits you at a sample sale, right after the long and tedious drive to get there? Save your strength for digging through the clothing racks by flying over instead.
Complain About the Lack of 3G
Admit it: you’re one of those people who manages to complain about 3G – or lack thereof – any chance you get. And you’ll probably carry that tradition forward into the future of transportation.
Post a Selfie in the Sky
You regularly take selfies at the steering wheel of your own car, so why would a flying taxi be any different? Besides, we love any excuse to be able to use the #OnlyInDubai hashtag yet again.
Watch the Latest Episode of 'Girls'
The final season of Girls is in full swing, and Hannah has just found that (spoiler alert) she’s pregnant – gasp! Download each episode and resist the urge to watch it immediately; your morning commute shall serve that purpose now.
Find an Alternative to Your Starbucks Drive-Thru
Floating taxis may soon be a reality, but floating Starbucks outlets along the way? That may take a while, so it’s time to find a new place that will have your daily order down pat.
Indulge Your Curiosity with a Sneaky Fly-By
Not that we’re encouraging it, but secret stalking on Instagram can go up a notch and become secret stalking from the skies. Seriously, though — we’re totally kidding.
