If you don’t already know, you soon will – a brand new season of film screenings has returned to Alserkal Avenue, in collaboration with Cinema Akil, with the goal of “celebrating the finest in a broad spectrum of must-see contemporary, international films, spanning the past decade”. Entitled Work in Progress, the 18-week program of free, al fresco screenings is a delight for anyone who prefers a foreign film or edgy indie over a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, any day.
The dynamic lineup was curated with a diverse audience in mind as the new season hopes to harness the “creation of a cinema-going culture in Dubai”, one film at a time. Work in Progress has already showcased cinematic gems like Factory Girl and Barakah Meets Barakah since November of last year. Screenings will continue every Friday at 7 p.m. until March 31st at The Yard, with the exception of gripping thriller The Imposter, which will be shown at A4 Space.
Curious to see what’s in store? You can start by attending tomorrow’s presentation of the drama film Simshar, which tells a tragic story of survival at sea. And while it feels impossible to choose which ones we’re most looking forward to, there are a couple of highlights worth mentioning: Dégradé (a comedy about 13 Palestinian women trapped in a salon in the Gaza Strip), Karima (a documentary that depicts the “henna girls” of Marrakesh), and Dheepan (an award-winning film about a Sri Lankan immigrant in Paris).
