If we told you that a guilt-free chocolate milkshake was actually possible, you’d think we were delusional, right? Well, we’re not. This cacao “milk” – a combination of homemade vanilla almond milk sweetened with dates and blended with raw cacao powder and frozen bananas – manages to satisfy even the most stubborn of chocolate cravings. You’re welcome.
The use of raw cacao powder, which is unprocessed cacao that has been pressed at a very low temperature, means that this recipe is full of antioxidants and has a more complex chocolate flavor than if processed cocoa were used. The addition of maca powder (a Peruvian root vegetable known for its energy-boosting qualities) adds a delicious malted note to the milk. Trust us, you won’t be able to stop sipping.
P.S. Although it might be tempting to use readymade almond milk in order to save time, the flavor is much deeper when you prepare it from scratch. This recipe calls for a nut bag to strain the liquid from the almonds, which can be purchased here. You won’t regret putting in a bit of extra time for loads of extra taste – promise!

- 1 cup whole almonds
- 4 dates, pitted
- ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- 3 cups of water
- 1½ frozen bananas, cut into chunks
- 3 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tbsp maca powder
- 3 tbsp cacao nibs
Prepare the almonds by soaking them in water overnight.
The following morning, strain the almonds and rinse them under fresh water to remove any debris.
Place the soaked almonds in a high-powdered blender along with the dates, vanilla, cinnamon, sea salt, and water. Blend on high for about 45 seconds or until well combined.
Using a nut bag, strain the liquid from the almond mixture over a large bowl.
Use your hands to thoroughly squeeze out all the liquid until only the almond meal is left. (Tip: Use this leftover almond meal to make an awesome DIY face scrub.) You now have a batch of fresh, homemade almond milk!
Add the frozen bananas, raw cacao powder, maca powder, cacao nibs, and almond milk into a high-powdered blender and blend for 30 to 45 seconds or until well combined.
Enjoy cold with a sprinkle of cacao nibs on top.
