Last night, one of Snapchat’s live stories featured coverage from the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Viewers could watch as celebrities the likes of Kate Hudson took to the social-media platform to give the world a little glimpse of what it’s like to “Cannes” (yes, we’re making it a verb). Beyond the flawless makeup, shiny jewels, and black-tie gowns, we couldn’t take our eyes off one particular snap from the Cannes story: a shot of a real-life mermaid gliding through a pool with her shimmering tail with the caption, “Mermaids in the French Riveria! Good Night from Cannes! Bisous Bisous!”.
This sighting, plus Kim Kardashian’s recent Instagram post featuring an adorable North West and Penelope Scotland Disick (below), plus Britney Spears’ decision to put on a blue tail and swim around with her two sons, all lead to one exciting conclusion: Mermaids are no longer just a thing of Disney movies.
In fact, there are entire schools dedicated to this craft. If you’re eight years old and over, for $50 you can become a mermaid. Or merman, of course. Forget clowns and piñatas, real-life mermaids are the real next-level party entertainment in 2016.
