Last night, also known in the fashion industry as ‘Met Monday’, celebrities gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the Met Gala, an annual fundraising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. In addition to the gala, today also marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, Manus x Machina, which explores fashion in the age of technology, specifically narrowing in on how the haute couture of the 19th century was forever changed by the rise of the sewing machine, creating a unique division between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina). Highlights of the exhibition include a Chanel wedding ensemble by Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Dior’s haute couture from the 1950s, and over 150 other ensembles, all on display until August 14th.
In keeping with this theme, Instagram quickly turned into a yearbook of fashion insiders decked out in edgy and tech-inspired looks. Here, Savoir Flair rounds up the most show-stopping Instagrams of the 2016 Met Gala, from a glittering Gigi Hadid accompanied by an armored Zayn Malik to Karolina Kurkova’s light-up Marchesa gown in partnership with IBM.

Tonight, the stunning @EmmaWatson on the #RedCarpet at the Met Ball in a look crafted by the incredible team at @Calvinklein. With the help of @ecoage this 5 piece look is created from 3 fabrics woven from yarns all made from recycled plastic bottles. Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants – being able to turn this waste into a high quality material is a real success story. Also this beautiful look was designed with the intention to be repurposed for future use; the pants can be worn on their own, the train can be used for another red carpet – the ultimate #30Wears! #MetGala2016 Makeup: @therealdotti Hair: @visapyyapy
