Set to officially open on August 31st, Dubai Opera has announced its first performance, legendary opera superstar Placido Domingo.
Often described as “the King of Opera” and “the greatest operatic artist of modern times”, Domingo has recorded hundreds of operas in a variety of languages at the most prestigious opera houses in the world. In addition to having performed over 3,600 times, Domingo has won fourteen Grammys to date.
The world has been anticipating the opening of Dubai’s dhow-shaped opera building by architect Janus Rostock, which was designed to seat 2,000 people and have the capacity to shift from theatre to concert hall and even banquet hall, allowing the space to host a variety of events including theatre, opera, ballet, orchestras, concerts, fashion shows, conferences, and art exhibitions.
Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, has said of the project, “Dubai Opera is our tribute to our city and the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to establish Dubai as a city of arts, culture, performing arts, and world-class events. An architectural masterpiece, it draws design inspiration from our own heritage, while the focus on bringing exclusive and accomplished performing arts places it on the league of the world’s finest theatres.”
Located in Downtown Dubai, Dubai Opera promises to offer a host of cultural initiatives and will be home to a restaurant and a sky garden with views of Dubai Fountain and the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.
