Tawa, Abu Dhabi’s first homegrown gluten-free cafe, has opened in the country’s capital. Tawa, which in Arabic means ‘flat frying pan’, is a name chosen to reflect founder Reem Al Shemari’s Emirati roots. Al Shemari recently opened the first outpost of Tawa in Al Muneera Plaza, serving up a menu ranging from french toast, cakes, and bread, to traditional Emirati donuts — all 100% gluten-free.
Al Shemari, who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease several years ago, explains of her concept, “Gluten-free food is very misunderstood. I love food and don’t believe a single calorie should be wasted, so even after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I wasn’t going to sacrifice taste. I started cooking gluten-free food and my friends thought it was so delicious… they couldn’t believe it was gluten-free. With the lack of gluten-free options in the UAE, I thought ‘Let’s change the perception that people have and give them a real taste of delicious gluten-free food,’ while at the same time providing those with Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance a place where they can confidently order anything from the menu.”
Tawa is open daily from 12:00 op.m. to 10:00 p.m.
