If the last time you went to a restaurant you couldn’t decide what to order from its multi-page menu, then Burger & Lobster is the place for you. The London-born upmarket fast-food joint, which recently opened in Dubai’s Burj Daman tower, serves only three signature dishes: a lobster roll, a whole lobster, and a beef burger. Each dish is priced at a fixed AED 127/SAR 130.
Of course there’s some level of customization available for the dishes; the 1.5 lbs whole lobster is served either steamed or grilled, and plain or with lemon and garlic butter, while the beef burger is available with cheese or bacon, or both. Diners should expect salty shoe-string fries and a dainty side salad (and a plastic bib if they order the whole lobster) with their meal as well. Bonus points for ordering the restaurant’s creamy milkshakes.
As mentioned, the novelty of the limited menu is surely part of the appeal of this dining experience. And, of course, so is the fact that Burger & Lobster is highly acclaimed in London, having successfully bridged the gap between high-end dining and fast food to carve out a very niche place in the mainstream restaurant landscape for itself, as well as a loyal fanbase. While we appreciate the simplicity of having only three sparse-but-delicious dishes in concept, in execution Dubai’s Burger & Lobster outpost has some serious room for improvement before claiming its crown as a go-to dining spot on the crowded Dubai restaurant scene.
Upon being seated, we waited a whopping 40 minutes for our food to arrive, which, off the bat, took one star away from the simple and seamless dining experience we expected. We could see the chefs working thanks to the restaurant’s open kitchen design, which left us tempted to go inside and prepare the food ourselves. When our dishes did arrive, having ordered one of each of the signature plates, the texture of the lobster — both the whole grilled lobster and the roll — was unfortunately of the chewy variety. Is this merely due to the fact that the restaurant was recently opened? We’d like to hope so. However, if you’re going to a restaurant for its stripped-down approach, you would hope those three dishes would simply blow your mind.
