Because heart-shaped cookies and Valentine’s Day go together like Savoir and Flair, we’ve tapped Dubai’s Magnolia Bakery to demonstrate the art of mastering the perfect festive sugar cookie.
1. Pick a sugar cookie recipe of your choice and prep all your ingredients. These will most likely include all-purpose flour, butter, powdered sugar, salt, eggs, and molasses.
2. Combine your ingredients. Split the dough into six equal-sized balls before chilling for at least an hour. The dough can be chilled up to three days or frozen for up to 30 days. If it is frozen, thaw it in your fridge overnight.
3. Remove one dough ball at a time from the refrigerator and let rest for about five minutes. You don’t want the dough to get warm to the touch, but you want it to be pliable. Lightly dust the countertop with flour.
4. Roll out the dough evenly, about ¼ inch thick. Dip your cutters in flour so that the dough doesn’t stick to them.
5. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Don’t mix your cookie sizes on one sheet; small should go with small, large should go with large.
6. To sugar your cookies, have a variety of sanding sugars available in separate bowls. Generously sprinkle each cookie with sanding sugar being careful not to get too much sugar on the cookie sheet.
7. Your cookies need to be cold before you put them in the oven. You may need to put your cookie sheet in the refrigerator for ten minutes.
8. Make sure your oven cooks evenly. Bake one tray at a time on the middle shelf, rotating half way through baking.
9. Depending on the size of the cookies, your baking time will vary. Small cookies may only take eight minutes, while large cookies could take as much as twelve to fourteen minutes.
10. When your cookies have begun to puff up slightly, gently lift them to check that the bottom is ever-so-slightly browning. Remove them from the oven immediately as cookies will continue to cook while cooling.
