Emma Watson drew attention to the lost art of the book club when she recently launched a feminist version called Shared Shelf. So far, she has amassed over 68,000 members on the digital platform Good Reads. The first book up for discussion in her club is the feminist manifesto My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem, a candid account of the writer and activist’s life and development in her early twenties during the equality era.

Here at Savoir Flair, we believe Watson may be on to something. With the UAE having declared 2016 as the Year of Reading, which means plenty of initiatives across the country to encourage people to pick up books, these clubs are a great opportunity to bring together like-minded literary lovers to chat and share perspectives on specific stories, as well as larger philosophical issues. Before launching your own Watson-inspired literary endeavor, here are a few key questions to ask yourself:

1. What do you want to get out of your book club?
2. What type of books inspire you?
3. How will you choose what books the group reads?
4. How big will your book club be?
5. Where will your book club meetings take place?
6. Will the meetings follow an agenda? If so, who is responsible for creating this?
7. How often will you meet?
8. Will there be food at the meetings?

Whatever direction you decide to go in, Savoir Flair’s selection of books, from self-help titles to professional reads, will help you get your book club off the ground.
