Long gone are the simple days of drinking your smoothie from a glass. Today, it’s all about using a spoon to eat a beautiful, colorful smoothie bowl instead. The art of the smoothie bowl is in covering it with healthy toppings, from seeds to fruits to nut butters. Just think of your smoothie as a blank canvas and paint away.

Read on to discover three key tips for creating a colorful smoothie bowl and discover two delicious recipes.

1. It’s all about the toppings.
The toppings are what make the smoothie bowl stand out, so get creative. Chia seeds, flax seeds, fresh fruit, granola, dried fruit, and cacao nibs are great options. These toppings will also help keep you energized and full for longer. Edible flowers or a sprinkle of fresh herbs are other visually pleasing touches that can elevate the look of your bowl.

2. Consistency is key.
When making your smoothie, frozen fruit helps to keep it cold and thick without it turning into a watery mess. Frozen bananas are an absolute necessity and add a thick creaminess that is unachievable with room-temperature fruit. Another trick is to keep the bowl you will be using in the freezer the night before so it stays cold during the entirety of your breakfast. Adding in a bit of avocado also helps keep the consistency thick.

3. Keep the toppings tidy.
Keep the granola, nuts, and seeds in straight and neat lines. Using a small teaspoon here is very helpful. When slicing your fruit, cut everything uniformly and without any jagged edges; it should be smooth and tidy. Try to keep your toppings in groups and tightly packed, and consider leaving some negative space in the bowl rather than covering the whole thing up.
