Fashion and music have a shared history that is so intricately interwoven that it’s hard to tell which came first, the fashion or the music. There are icons that span both categories, like David Bowie, Madonna, and Grace Jones, but a new crop of independent artists offers a compelling new spin on modern fashion, with experimental sounds to go with it. Read on to discover three bands that are as stylish as they are sonically sound.

Jupiter

Parisian disco and electro-funk duo Jupiter formed in 2012 but are still relatively underground. It’s hard to see why, given their infectious tunes and super stylish music videos that are reminiscent of the kind of worlds that Wes Anderson creates in his films. In their video for Do It, the duo captures the excitement and escapism of new love between two people, which becomes repetitive and stales over time until they’re able to kick-start the magic again with interpretative role playing that spans multiple cultures, eras, and themes. You’ll want to live in every set from this music video.

Kimbra

Kimbra is from Los Angeles by way of New Zealand and has paved the way as a pioneer in the field of electropop. Her music blends elements from R&B, funk, soul, and disco, but you may know her best from her viral Grammy-nominated collaboration with Gotye called Somebody That I Used to Know. Her unique sound is matched by her unique look, and her stylish music videos are extremely captivating.

Grimes

Claire Elise Boucher, better known to the world by her stage name Grimes, is a petite force of nature. Not only does she produce her experimental electronic sounds on her own, but she also conceptualizes and edits her own music videos, which is pretty amazing given that the creative output of most female musicians is actually the work of vast marketing teams. With the recent release of her new album ‘Art Angels’, Grimes is once again the talk of the town and her album has been critically praised to the point where it’s landed on nearly every “Best Album of 2015” list.
