If you took “letting go when on vacation” a little too literally, or you’ve found yourself reaching for the Oreos whilst escaping the summer heat, then listen up. There’s a new meal-delivery service in Dubai that promises local, organic, good-for-you grub that won’t leave you longing for cronuts. Instead, you’ll feel lighter, your energy levels will increase, and the spring in your summer step will be restored. The secret? You’ll be eating like a caveman. Get that mental image of a hairy-chested man clad in a loincloth and beating his chest with his hands out of your head. The Paleolithic diet has become one of the most popular ways of eating, with celebrities like Megan Fox, Uma Thurman, and Adriana Lima, getting in on the ancient action. Its principles are simple: cut out anything that you wouldn’t have had access to without the technology and science behind most of today’s foods, as a result eating like a caveman. The Paleo plan really takes things back to basics. Tens of thousands of years ago, humans didn’t snack on Snickers and sodas, or fill their bowls with Special K for breakfast. Instead, they ate what they could easily get their hands on. That means no gluten, dairy, grains, legumes, processed foods, or refined sugars, and instead lots of high-quality meats, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.
Saying goodbye to my yogurts, healthy cereal, and peanut butter (that was tough), I decided to embark on a five-day Paleo adventure with Love Food. For five days, I’d be trialing its ‘Lifestyle Plan’, having three meals, two snacks, and three “infused waters” delivered to my doorstep, every morning. Other options included the ‘Vitality’ plan, which shuns added sugar and is low GI, and the ‘Power’ plan, which is super high in protein for the more active person. Everything Love Food makes is created from organic, local ingredients to make for wholesome, nutritious, and delicious meals. Founded by Australian chefs Stuart Walton and Richard Hannaby, who between them have worked in some of the top restaurants and hotels in the world, Love Food’s concept is to encourage “a long-term healthy, sustainable lifestyle change in which you harness the power of nature to nourish your body with meals and snacks made from scratch with zero preservatives, using only the best that nature has to offer.”
Waking up every morning to a fresh delivery was both exciting and convenient. I had my daily food needs taken care of, with each meal coming in reusable glass containers that I didn’t need to wash up. A quick rinse before they went back in the cooler bag and outside my door, ready to be collected, is all it took. I practically jumped out of bed every morning to see what was in store for me. Breakfasts included a Japanese omelet with seaweed, Japanese spinach, and mushrooms; a hearty fry-up complete with turkey bacon and a sunny-side-up egg; and, my personal favorite, coconut berry yogurt with grain-free granola.
Snacks ranged from smoothies and dehydrated veggie chips to macaroons and muffins that are so good you won’t ever want a non-Paleo one. The infused waters kept me hydrated throughout the day with different flavor combinations, such as pineapple and lemongrass, beetroot orange and green tea, and spiced plum Earl Grey iced tea – each day’s flavors are announced in the morning on Love Food’s Instagram account, @LoveFood_ME.
For lunch, there were lighter options like a chicken Caesar salad, smoked salmon with quinoa and mustard, or warming chicken pies with sweet potato mash. Dinners were delicious, bringing the comfort of home-cooked, healthy food to my kitchen each night with tasty treats like braised lamb with sweet potato and celeriac mustard gratin; roast beef with roasted veggies; and chicken laksa with radish noodles, bok choy, carrots, and bean sprouts. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. And, what’s even better, everything is portion controlled into generous (but not huge) servings, so there’s no risk of eating too much – although I have to admit there were (numerous) times when I would happily have eaten more. The food is that good.
The containers are stickered with a QR code that, when scanned with a QR reader app, reveal the meal’s content and instructions regarding the time of day the food is for, if it’s to be eaten hot, cold, or at room temperature, and how long it needs to be heated for. Everything has been thought of and taken care of for you. The perfect way to kick-start a healthy eating regime or to make sure you’re getting enough nutrients no matter how busy you are, Love Food’s ‘Lifestyle’ plan really is for people who love food.
Love Food’s ‘Lifestyle Plan’ starts at AED 812/SAR 892 per week. For more information visit www.lovefoodme.com.
