There is no doubt that we humans are obsessed with the idea of smooth, radiant skin. Most of our skincare routines focus on feeding our dermis pore-blurring masks and hydrating products like hyaluronic acid and squalane. The digital era has only given momentum to this fixation, making achieving that flawless look as easy as one swipe. But how do you perfect the glistening beauty look sans filter, IRL? After the tremendous popularity of the K-beauty ‘Glass Skin’ trend, ‘Dolphin Skin’ has been the makeup trend making splashes (pun intended) in the beauty circuit since last summer.

What exactly is the ‘Dolphin Skin’ makeup trend? In simple words, makeup artists are using a whole bunch of products to achieve a dewy look that imitates the smooth, glossy, wet skin of dolphins. Celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips – who popularized the ‘Dolphin Skin’ makeup look – calls it “a glistening, luminous, fresh-out-of-the-water makeup look.” Long fascinated with radiant, hydrated beauty looks, Phillips was naturally eager to get behind the trend. Phillips has already tried out the gleaming makeup look on her buzzworthy clientele like Hailey Beiber and Jennifer Lopez

Curious about perfecting the look at home? You’ll need heaps of hydrating products and a whole lot of patience. Like any beauty look, the foundation of the ‘Dolphin Skin’ makeup look is a healthy dermis. It is essential to build a skincare regimen catered to you to maintain skin vitality.

The key to achieving the slippery ‘Dolphin Skin’ look is playing with a series of illuminating and moisturizing products. Phillips suggests applying a series of hydrating makeup products – like liquid highlighters and luminous foundations – on top of each other to create dimension. Avoid using heavy textured products and opt for liquid blushes, highlighters, and even liquid eyeshadows and glossy pouts to finish the look.
