We know you’ve heard about the buzzy beauty tool, NuFace. We know you’ve watched it glide across some seriously famous faces while scrolling through your social media feeds. But have you ever paused and wondered about the science behind the NuFace facial toning device?

The NuFace beauty tool uses microcurrent technology to lift, tone, and contour your facial muscles. But what exactly is microcurrent technology? Savoir Flair sat down with NuFace’s co-founder and microcurrent aesthetician, Tera Peterson, where she explained the various NuFace devices and also debunked the most common myths associated with the skincare tool. Scroll down to discover everything you need to know about NuFace.

How did NuFace come to be? What is the story behind the brand?
My mom, my sister, and I started Nuface back in 2005, but my mom’s been working with microcurrent technology since 1985. She has dedicated her life to microcurrent technology. She would travel – with her big professional machines – from where we live in San Diego up to Los Angeles to treat the most beautiful faces in Hollywood. As microcurrent was truly very unique back in the day, she had people from all over Hollywood coming to her to lift and tone their faces. And she did that for 15 years. As she and her clients both got older, she recognized the need for more frequent microcurrent treatments. This was in the early 2000s, and that’s when she started planting the seeds to create an at-home device.

I had recently graduated from college at the time and one day I called my mom and said, “let’s do this together.” We decided that I would go to an aesthetician school as I wanted to learn about the industry. So I did that simultaneously while writing the business plan for NuFace, and in 2005 we launched our first device.

Could you please tell us about microcurrent technology? How exactly does it work?
Microcurrent – just like the word implies – is a low-level electrical current. So the science behind that is that everything has a molecular structure. Everything has a frequency, including our bodies. And as we age, that frequency slows down. Microcurrent actually mimics our body’s frequency at a good, healthy rate. So think about NuFace as an external battery jump-starting your cells.

The low-level current goes in and stimulates the Adenosine Triphosphate – and also increases it by 500% – resulting in increased collagen, elastin, and toning of the facial muscles. Microcurrent is more of a holistic approach to anti-aging. Think about NuFace as fitness for your face, because not only is it stimulating collagen and elastin, but it’s toning your muscles, which is critical to our total skin health. The fact that we can have advanced microcurrent technology literally in the palm of our hands is groundbreaking.

What is the main difference between NuFace’s at-home microcurrent devices and professional microcurrent treatments? Does using NuFace eliminate the need for a professional treatment?
We actually used to manufacture big professional microcurrent machines — that is how we started. So, with NuFace, you can truly enjoy the benefits of professional-grade microcurrent at home. It is just as strong as the professional treatment.

The professional treatment is just a different delivery technique. If you came to me for a professional treatment, I would use two different tools to manually manipulate the different muscle groups. NuFace is just more of a user-friendly approach where you can lift and tone your face in a matter of minutes. We know that our clients cannot spend an hour lifting and toning their faces on daily basis.

But as an aesthetician, I always encourage professional microcurrent facials. You know, it’s similar to how you can wash and dry your hair at home, but the salon blowout is 10 times better. So, up until a certain age – say in your 20s or 30s – you could bypass the professional treatments. But when you get into your 40s, that is when you need to get professional treatments in combination with NuFace.

And what is the ideal age to start using the at-home device?
I would always recommend starting early. Microcurrent is great for younger people as well. In your 20s, you can use Nuface as a preventive tool as it helps to depuff and stimulate lymphatic drainage. Those in their 20s and mid-20s can use NuFace for two to three days a week to tone and contour their faces. And then, of course, in your 30s and beyond, NuFace becomes more of a frequent treatment that you do as a part of your at-home skincare routine.

Can you please walk us through the various NuFace devices?
We have the ‘Trinity’, which is our hero device. This is the device that everybody knows and loves. It is designed to work with several interchangeable attachments that you can switch between with the click of a button. It comes with the ‘Facial Trainer’ attachment which lifts, tones, and contours your neck, cheeks, and forehead. You can also use the ‘Eye Enhancement’ attachment, which is the precision tool modeled after our professional tools. You can use it around the eye and lip area. The ‘Trinity’ can also be used with the LED ‘Wrinkle Reducer’ attachment. So the ‘Trinity’ really gives you versatility.

We have the ‘Trinity Mini’, which is our entry-level microcurrent device. Like the ‘Trinity’, it is all about lifting and toning your muscles. It’s great to lift, tone, and contour your neck, cheeks, and your forehead. If you’re 30 or below, this is the device you want. It has three different settings, it is portable, and packs a powerful punch.

We also have the ‘Fix’ device, which is a little mascara-sized device. So where our larger devices work with the muscles, this one works with your skin. It is great at tackling little lines and wrinkles; you can even plump the lips. It is your quick fix. It’s a three-minute treatment.

And lastly, we have the new ‘NuBody’ device, which is for toning your body. As women, 90 percent of us have cellulite. So this is great for smoothing ampoules and tightening up the skin on your arms, thighs, and also your hips. It’s actually three times stronger than our face devices.

How often can one use the NuFace toning device?
It is safe to use NuFace every day if you want to. However, the typical regimen that we recommend is to use NuFace five days a week for five minutes for a duration of 60 days. After that, you can reduce your frequency down to two to three times a week.

You need to cleanse your skin before using NuFace. After cleansing, you apply the NuFace gel primer and then you lift and tone your face. After that, you can apply your regular moisturizer and sunscreen and you’re ready for the day. All of our activators are skincare-quality products. They are very hydrating, so you don’t need to remove them after using the tool.

What type of results can one expect after using the NuFace ‘Trinity’? How long do the results last?
So the beauty of NuFace is that it delivers instant results. I always tell my clients to use the device on half of their face, look in the mirror, and smile – you’ll see there is an instant lift in your face. You can expect that instant gratification with NuFace, but the results get better and better and better the more you use it.

What are the myths/misconceptions about microcurrent technology that you’d like people to stop believing?
The first one is rather obvious. People tend to believe that microcurrent hurts. Well, it does not. It is actually very soothing and relaxing when you use it properly with the gel primer.

Another myth people tend to believe is that you can’t use NuFace if you get Botox or fillers, which is untrue. NuFace will only enhance the effect. It is recommended to wait for seven to 14 days after your get Botox or fillers to use NuFace.

Another myth that people believe in is that you can use any serum or cream instead of the NuFace gel primer. You need a true conductivity gel – like our specially designed primer – with microcurrent if you want optimal results.

When you co-founded the brand back in 2005, what was your initial dream for NuFace? Did you imagine it to be the skincare essential that it has evolved to be?
It was our goal to get NuFace in the hands of every client and it continues to be. We believe very passionately in what we are doing, and it’s slowly coming true, which is really fun.
