Growing up, we got a lot of messages about what being a woman is all about, and most of them were mixed. A perfect woman should be beautiful, but not too beautiful; smart, but not too smart; hard-working, but never ambitious. Be a great conversationalist, but don’t talk too much. Be appealing, but don’t be too sexy. Wear beautiful clothes, but don’t reveal too much. Who can keep up with all of these rules? And furthermore, who’s making them?
Mademoiselle Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel cut through the muck with a single incisive quote: “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” That means whoever you are, whatever your values, fascinations, hobbies, and passions might be, authentic self-expression is the avenue to true beauty – both inside and out. After all, there is nothing more beautiful than a confident woman who has truly decided to be herself, societal expectations be damned.
In the 21st century, woman have shrugged off the mantle of repression, and have been conducting themselves in artful, inventive ways. Never has beauty been more diverse, more inclusive, more experimental, or more individualistic. The new Fall/Winter 2020 makeup collection from Chanel, titled ‘Candeur et Experience Act II’ (which translates to “candor and experience”), deepens an honest conversation about what it really means to be a woman. Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica designed the collection to capture “a journey into the duality of women and femininity.” It holds a prism up, reflecting women that are complex. They are strong and soft, worldly and innocent, provocative and sensual.

In the editorial video above, created by Savoir Flair for Chanel Beauty, we explore the dual-sided nature of femininity with a minimalist play of colors and emotions. For the video, we tapped celebrated makeup artist and Chanel beauty ambassador Toni Malt to execute the concept. From pink to red, and shades in between, our heroine expresses a range of emotions reflecting the complexities of womanhood. Complemented by rosy ‘Baume Essentiel’ cream blushes, ruby nail varnishes, mauve eyeshadows, and more from the Chanel Fall/Winter 2020 makeup range – which change along with her mood – our video proves that real metamorphosis is just a drop of color away.
