Between the rise of empowered female artists, the rebellious grunge movement, and a surging interest in R&B and hip-hop, the 90s emerged as a decade packed with diverse style inspiration that has continued to inform modern creative fields. In fact, if we had Instagram in the 90s, it wouldn’t look that much different than our present-day feed.
Nineties trends have made a roaring comeback, both in fashion and accessories and in makeup and hairstyles. In a year where everything feels mad and unpredictable, chasing nostalgia offers a sense of stability. Celebrities and influencers alike are choosing popular 90s hairstyles like space buns, half-up half-down, and side ponytails to style their hair. Hair accessories like bandanas and wide headbands are also signs that the decade is back in fashion.

Before the age of dry shampoos, the half-up half-down hairstyle was the styling trick to pump volume into your hair while disguising unwashed locks. Given how easy it is to replicate the look, and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Dua Lipa showing an affinity for it, we don’t mind this hairstyle making a comeback one bit.
There is no doubt that 90s obsession is at its peak. Chunky face-framing fringes – iconic to the 90s – are tremendously popular among “It” girls. The trend’s comeback can be credited to Dua Lipa’s chunky blonde face-framing fringe at the Grammys earlier this year.
Twin braids, sealed at the end with colorful rubber bands, are making a comeback too. Influencers like Karen Wazen and Negin Mirsalehi both sported the retro look with their unique take.
Even hair accessories are being borrowed from the decade. Dana Hourani and Alexa Chung schooled us on pairing bandanas – one of the season’s hottest accessories – with swimwear, while Kylie Jenner sported a nostalgic look complete with a floral bandana and 90s handbag.
Padded headbands from the 80s shot back to fame last year, but now broad headbands, typical to the 90s aesthetic, have skipped into the spotlight.
