Ever since the arrival of No7‘s ‘Protect & Perfect Serum’ sparked a shopping frenzy back in 2007, the Boots brand has become the go-to for those looking for effective but affordable anti-aging skincare.

Now, the retailer has another massive hit on its hands with the No7 ‘Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate,’ which has become Boots’ top-selling beauty product, shifting over 130,000 units since it launched at the end of May.

That equates to 1.3 tubes being sold every minute. But why is it so good?

The serum combines two of the most powerful wrinkle-busting ingredients: retinol and peptides. Retinol, a form of vitamin A, works to stimulate collagen production, plumping out fine lines and wrinkles, as well as targeting pigmentation. Peptides are strings of amino acids that send a ‘signal’ to skin to produce more collagen.

There are already a wide variety of retinol and peptide products on the market though, so why has the new No7 serum proven so popular? Dr. Mike Bell, No7 skincare scientific advisor, believes it’s because the ‘Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate’ contains the perfect balance of actives, with 0.3% retinol.

Retinol is a strong ingredient and it can sometimes cause irritation, redness, or dryness when people use it for the first time, which is why experts recommend starting with a small amount and using it a couple of times a week, before building up to nightly use, and always using a high-factor sunscreen during the day.

“The clinically proven ‘sweet spot’ formulation and incredible skin results have made this product an instant bestseller,” says Dr. Bell of the concentrate, which uses retinol encapsulated in oil, so that it’s released slowly throughout the night, to maximize effectiveness and minimize irritation.

Priced at AED195 for 30ml, the formula also contains an ingredient called bisabolol, derived from chamomile, that soothes the skin.

Clinical trials have shown strong results for the concentrate, with 81% of testers saying the product transformed their skin, and 89% saying it gave great results while being gentle on the skin.

“I tested the product for seven weeks and I was over the moon with the results,” said one tester. “I felt like my fine lines had reduced and the overall texture of my skin had softened. I would definitely recommend it to my friends.”

Reviews on social media and on the Boots website reveal that shoppers who have been using the product are impressed with the results.

It’s important to remember that no matter what retinol product you use, you won’t see results overnight, as it takes a few weeks to see the effects. But by carefully building up to nightly use, you could reap the rewards of this powerhouse ingredient.
