There’s long been a debate about the proper order to apply your makeup. Does concealer go on before or after foundation? Is eye makeup the first or last focus? And don’t even get us started on the order to set your contour. However, a viral TikTok trend has blown all of the previous arguments out of the water, completely upending the preconceived “right way” for applying your makeup.
In the Middle East, we’re not only contending with wearing masks when we go out, but also extreme temperatures that ensure that no matter how long you bake your look, it’s going to melt. However, this TikTok trick has been wildly successful at keeping everything in place, no matter what. How do we know? We tested it ourselves, and after seeing the results, we’ve been employing the method ever since.
Here’s our personal tip: before you start the process, make sure you apply any kind of product that contains niacinamide. This miracle ingredient is derived from Vitamin B, and not only does it help calm the skin, but it also mattifies it beautifully and creates a smooth canvas for makeup to cling to. The new Charlotte Tilbury ‘Magic Elixir’ serum is the best, in our expert opinion.
Pioneered by a user named Jarida, or @jaridmat on TikTok – whose viral video has been imitated and shared thousands of times – the trick is in how you create your base. Are you ready to be mind-blown by a whole new method of putting on your makeup? Buckle in.
Tap any product containing niacinamide onto your skin with your fingertips, and then smooth it in with light, feathery upward strokes. Next, use a fluffy brush to cover your entire face in a translucent setting powder. Then mist a setting spray all over, and let it dry. Are you already scratching your head? We were too, at first. After the setting spray fully dries, apply your primer. Finally, add your foundation. We prefer applying foundation with our fingertips, and then dabbing it lightly with a damp BeautyBlender sponge. Afterwards, we add another layer of setting spray as budge-proof insurance.
If you’re not into full-coverage looks, skip the foundation (we do all the time). Because this technique essentially “seals” the skin – hence its magical resistance to melting or creasing – give your skin a nice reward at night after you remove your makeup. Our go-to? The new Wishful ‘Thirst Trap’ sheet mask, by Huda Beauty.
