Lafayette Street, New York City, 1994. The original Supreme store was the place to be, the epicenter of a movement that would spawn legions of imitators. But, there’s only one original. The streetwear brand, most closely associated with skatewear and surprise “drops”, has been pushing the fashion envelope for over two decades, and it shows no signs of slowing down. While Supreme has engineered plenty of firsts, its latest announcement is a first that we didn’t see coming.
Celebrity and fashion makeup artist Pat McGrath – who herself has seen plenty of firsts and a career in innovative product creation – and Supreme are collaborating. And we are here for it. Marking the streetwear brand’s first foray into lipstick, the new Pat McGrath x Supreme drop is already causing a stir online.
Supreme’s famous box logo, with its white text on a red background (inspired by Barbara Kruger’s photo collage creations) is as recognizable as the McDonald’s double arches. As such, collections have become sought-after collector’s items, especially due to the unusual brands Supreme tends to partner with. Previous collaborations have been with the likes of outdoor recreation company North Face, luggage brand Rimowa, the harmonica brand Hohner, and everyone’s favorite friendly frog, Kermit.
The Supreme x Pat McGrath collaboration is likely to spurn a lot of interest, especially because the packaging is an ideal blend of McGrath’s signature gold lips and Supreme’s vibrant logo. Not only is it eye-catching, but the lipstick hue is one of the truest shades of red you’ll find anywhere.
In classic Supreme fashion, the launch date isn’t anywhere to be found. However, we do know that the the first drop of Supreme’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection is happening this week, online only. Keep an eye on its website to snag the collab before it sells out.
