“I was thinking about a punk princess coming out of ‘Le Palace’ at dawn,” reveals Virginie Viard of her Chanel Couture Fall 2020 collection, which debuted earlier this month via the fashion house’s digital presentation. “With a taffeta dress, big hair, feathers, and lots of jewelry, this collection is more inspired by Karl Lagerfeld than Gabrielle Chanel. Karl would go to ‘Le Palace’, he would accompany these very sophisticated and very dressed up women, who were very eccentric too.” And eccentric is exactly what she delivered – complete with shimmery metallics, feather-adorned locks, and flashes of pink aplenty, with a strong eighties’ vibe running throughout.
Perfectly complementing the collection’s ultra-rock romanticism, Lucia Pica – Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer – created a playful, punk-inspired look with a sophisticated twist (of course). Beautiful balmy skin, loaded with subtle highlight, provided the perfect natural backdrop for a dark lip and graphic liner look made for the fall/winter season. “We maintained a punk attitude to the makeup going from a bold eyeliner to a deep dark sophisticated lip, through a defined yet subtle use of pink”, she described to Savoir Flair.
So, if like us, this look has you excited to dig out your deep berry lipsticks once the heat and humidity subside, then take a leaf out of Pica’s book and read on to find out exactly how she created the moody makeup look of dreams.
Skin
For the perfect makeup look, it’s all about that base. Ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed and apply a light layer of the ‘Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum’ to load skin with powerful active Camellia Alba extracts to lock in moisture for 24 hours. Next, brighten your eyes and reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles with the ‘Hydra Beauty Micro Gel Yeux’, and finish your prep with the lightweight ‘Hydra Beauty Camellia Water Cream’ to further nourish and deeply hydrate.
Then it’s onto your makeup, starting with the ‘Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint’ foundation. Its revolutionary formula features patented microfluidics and micro-droplets of oil to create a nude-skin finish that’s natural and luminous. Keep eyes bright and beautiful with the ‘Éclat Lumière’ highlighting pen – guaranteed to keep dark circles at bay – before dusting skin with a touch of the ‘Poudre Universelle Libre’ to provide a sheer, lightweight veil of coverage and keep your makeup looking fresher for longer. Next, take the multitasking ‘La Palette Essentielle’. It features a bronzer and blush, so it’s amazing for subtly sculpting the cheekbones and jawline while adding a glow to the skin. A slick of the new ‘Baume Essentiel’ blush stick in ‘Rosée’, and a pop of the blush in ‘Rouge Profond’ to add a flush to the cheeks, and you’re good to go.
Eyes
Using the ‘Le Liner de Chanel’ liquid liner in ‘Noir Profond’, Pica drew a thin, elongated line across the top of the eyelid, contrasting perfectly against the transparent and luminous lid finish created by a sweep of the ‘Baume Essentielle’ in ‘Transparent’. Add a slick or two of the ‘Le Volume Revolution de Chanel’ mascara for the ultimate definition, et voilà – your punk perfect peepers are complete.
Lips
No punk-inspired look is complete without a statement lip, which is why we’ll be stocking up on deep berry hues next season. Going for a touch of gothic glam, Pica created “very strong and deep, defined browny red lips” that aren’t just universally flattering but are guaranteed to take any look from day to night. Start by lining your lips with the ‘Le Crayon Lèvres in Rogue Noir’ before coating them with a slick of the new ‘Rouge Coco in Attraction’ lipstick. The only problem? You’ll have to wait ‘til later this year to get your hands on that dreamy lip color, but watch this space…
