When it comes to beauty icons, Naomi Campbell – who turns 50 tomorrow, if you can believe it – always makes the list. And rightly so. She was the first black model to grace the cover of French and British Vogue, landed a beauty campaign with NARS at the age of 48, and is the only black model in the original group of ‘supers’. Not to mention the fact that she recently launched her own talk show, is involved in countless charity initiatives, and has walked the runway for every major designer in existence. So, in celebration of her milestone birthday, these are the five beauty rules to live by, according to Queen Campbell.
First Things First
Okay, so it’s not a beauty tip per se, but Campbell credits her militant hygiene routine for keeping her fit and healthy despite her international lifestyle. When she took to her YouTube channel to reveal that she travels with gloves, a face mask, and antibacterial wipes (which she uses to wipe down everything around her on the plane), many thought she was nuts. But given the past few months, it seems like the supermodel was onto something…
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
You’ll also find a “hydration pack” in her carry-on, which she crams full of face masks, Johnson’s ‘Make-Up Be Gone’ face wipes, and (we suspect) her go-to face cream, which she reveals is by marine-based skincare brand Biotherm. Her love of face oils is also no secret; she actually mixes them into her face cream for an added boost. “Hydration, for me, is the most important thing. I like my skin to look greasy and oily,” she revealed on YouTube. “I’m constantly moisturizing – masks, face masks, creamy masks, paper masks…” Can you say supermodel glow?

All About That Base
Speaking of glowing skin, Campbell’s makeup routine complements this perfectly. “I don’t like my base to ever look like a mask. I don’t ever wear base on my forehead because I want to just look like I don’t have anything on,” she revealed in a YouTube video on her five-minute beauty routine.
To keep her makeup looking natural, never cakey, she applies her foundation or concealer with a disposable sponge, focusing on the T-zone and the area between her nose and lips, which she warns gets more discolored with age. She then buffs on the NARS ‘Pressed Powder in Mountain’ lightly onto her skin to add a subtle, radiant finish. When it comes to blusher, she likes a “high blush” and never wears it low on the cheeks, saying it looks “clown-y and it takes away from the bone structure”. Her base is complete with a sweep of powder highlighter across her cheekbones, forehead, and down the center of her nose.

The secret to Campbell’s ever-youthful features that haven’t drooped or dropped since she started her career? No, it’s not down to a killer facelift by a renowned plastic surgeon – it’s thanks to tape. The supermodel revealed that instead of going under the knife, she uses tape to lift and pull her skin and hold it in place. Pass the sellotape, please.
Gettin' Wiggy wit It
“I do take more care of my hair now because I lost all of it with extensions. I am more careful, and I do different things,” Campbell once revealed to Evening Standard. So, what does she rely on instead? Wigs. “Everybody in the world wears wigs. It doesn’t matter anymore. I do what I want.” That’s why she’s able to alternate between long locks, short curls, and a sleek bob on the red carpet – all without worrying about damaging her hair. Win-win.
