From home baking to hair dye, the DIY movement is in full swing – thanks in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, of course. Born of necessity, we have more agency than ever over our beauty routines. While services like lash tinting and brow lamination are better left to the professionals, others are easy to replicate at home. Dermaplaning, the skin treatment that uses a sharp blade to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz from your face, used to be something we visited a salon for. It turns out that it’s quite simple to do at home.

Women have turned to dermaplaning for years in order to create a smooth surface for their makeup, but we’re not wearing much makeup anymore. However, it’s also the best non-chemical exfoliating treatment around, and can radically change your skin for the better. For instance, women with acne scars have used dermaplaning for more than just the removal of fine facial hair – regular sessions can slowly reduce the appearance of scarring. Others, who suffer from dullness or dryness, report a much healthier natural glow after just one session. If you want to give it a go at home, here’s exactly what you need to know (and buy) to get started.

Need to Know

You’ll want to start with a dry, freshly cleaned face. Do not moisturize beforehand. Use a professional-grade dermaplaning tool and, holding the skin taut with your other hand, use a light but firm pressure to scrape upwards along your dermis, in the same motion as shaving.

Work in small patches, and avoid going over the same area twice on more sensitive areas near the eyes and lips. Please note that if you suffer from very sensitive skin or have rosacea, you must avoid dermaplaning entirely as it will only irritate your skin further. Once you are done, cleanse and moisturize your skin as normal, and enjoy the incredible glow.

Need to Buy

Some people use simple razors for dermaplaning at home, but we recommend using a professional-grade tool and cleaning it thoroughly between uses. Our favorite dermaplaning device and replenishment kit, below, can be delivered within the same day if you want to test out this treatment immediately.
